The idea of dieting has been around since ancient times but it wasn't until the mid-19th century that the concept of dieting and diet culture caught on. Lord Byron, a former member of the House of Lords, created the vinegar diet, to maintain his weight. However, historians traced the concept between dieting and weight loss to Englishman William Banting, who penned "A Letter on Corpulence," emphasizing the need to avoid sugar, starch, beer, milk, and butter. There may be no perfect formula for everyone to lose weight, but these are the diet crazes that shaped how we eat.

Most fad diets are cause for concern and often make you wonder how anyone could subject themselves to the process. Others have been closely studied and are proven to help with weight loss and weight maintenance.
