Superfoods are all the rage now. They constantly trend on social media websites where influencers push these ‘superfoods’ as healthy hacks for your life. But are they? What even makes a food ‘super’?
Truly, there are no superfoods. While there are fruits and vegetables with excellent nutrition, they aren’t a magical cure for anything. And too much of something, even ‘good’ food, can be bad for you.
Still, before we dive into examples of non-superfoods, let’s learn about the phrase a little more. According to the Cleveland Clinic, a superfood is food that is nutrient-dense and generally low-calorie. However, what does nutrient-dense mean? That’s the problem. It could mean anything!

Coconut Oil

Can oil, even one made of coconut, be considered a superfood? According to some, yes, however, the effects are overhyped. Just because it comes from a coconut doesn’t make it healthy. This is not an ingredient you want to use every day as it’s high in fat. A better alternative is olive oil.
Kale

Now, we aren’t saying that there is anything wrong with kale. It’s a delicious green that is packed with nutrients, but there are other greens, minus the bitter taste of kale, that do the same thing! Psychology Today even found one study that indicated kale isn’t any more nutrient than other cruciferous vegetables.
Chia Seeds

It seems like all smoothie and fruit places have been obsessed with chia seeds recently. These hard seeds are nutrient-heavy, but not enough to warrant the name, superfood. Plus, eating too many chia seeds does lead to uncomfortable side effects like digestive issues and inflammation. According to Healthline, eating too many chia seeds can also affect certain medications.
Hot Peppers

Although hot peppers pack heat and taste amazing, there is barely a difference between eating hot versus mild peppers. So, before you challenge yourself to eat two serrano peppers a day, consider lighter peppers like bell and banana. Plus, eating too much spicy food, including hot peppers, can harm your digestive system and skin/lips.
Cinnamon

Cinnamon doesn’t just add flavor to dishes; it’s also considered a superfood. But, a few people argue against this label. It’s not something you can have in large amounts. Doctors warn against eating a spoonful of cinnamon a day. A little goes a long way!
Goji Berries

Are Goji berries really the best berries to eat? Depends on who you ask. This is a long debate as some experts see it as an underrated fruit, while others roll their eyes at the berry’s overrated appearance. Regardless, these berries are everywhere and come with big health claims. One reason people consider the Goji berry overrated and hyped is because of its price tag. In the U.S., it is not readily accessible or inexpensive.
Matcha Tea

Suddenly, every coffee shop sells matcha. Although it is a delicious and intense green tea with benefits, can it be considered a true superfood? Eh. The price tag and how much sugar is added to these drinks are why it’s overrated and not as healthy as they claim to be.
Superfoods That ARE Worth It

Changing it up, let’s dive into some superfoods experts swear by!
Legumes

Legumes, which is a large category comprising so many different types of beans, is an excellent superfood! Harvard Medical School sings its praises as these small beans are full of fiber and folate. Because of their properties, they can lower your chance of developing heart disease.

They support heart and bone health and contain components that have been shown to prevent cancer. Interestingly, they are also connected to a lower risk of depression as avocados are high in folate.
Fish

The first and only meat to make our list is fish. Not only is it lower in calories than other types of meat, but it’s also filled with vitamins and nutrients.
