A majority of movies, when released in theaters, premiere to all, or most audiences. Some stand a bigger chance of success by appealing to a larger crowd and the selections available are typically widespread. Yet, for others, that large audience appeal is often minimized from the beginning when they are given an R-rating. This generally prevents a large portion of moviegoers from enjoying a film. This doesn't mean these films are any less deserving than a G or PG-rated film. It just means they didn't receive the recognition they might have deserved.

When released in theaters, R-rated films are not open to anyone under the age of 17 without a parent or guardian accompanying them. These films are specifically geared toward adults, and will only do well if adults are interested enough or can watch without worrying about children being exposed to potentially inappropriate material too young.

To gather this list of the underappreciated R-rated movies that deserve more recognition, 24/7 Tempo consulted several entertainment sources including IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and ScreenRant. Numerous movies that are perhaps a bit more deserving of recognition have didn't perform too well at the box office. These epic movies deserve more clout and respect than what they originally received.

Determining factors that lead to a movie's success range from how much revenue was earned at the box office to reviewing opinions from critics and audiences. (Click here to uncover the highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time.)
