R-rated films can be tricky. They may have outstanding storylines, excellent set design, fantastic characters full of depth, and all the earmarks that set it up for success. Yet, the film just doesn't do well at the box office. This can be attributed to its limited audience – thanks to its R-rating, a large portion of the population isn't welcome to watch them – and these R-rated films that deserve more love often fall by the wayside.

Some of these epic movies deserve more recognition than what they originally received. Many of them haven't welcomed the full-fledged success that many other films have enjoyed. These films may be better than various blockbuster hits, but for several reasons – perhaps they didn't receive high praise – over the years, many of these R-rated films listed here have fallen into the "underrated" category.

To gather this list of underrated R-rated films that deserve more love, 24/7 Tempo consulted several entertainment sources. These include IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and ScreenRant. (While we're on the topic of R-rated movies, click here to uncover the highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time.)
