Storms are often captivating to watch from afar and understanding the science that goes into them is intriguing. Weather phenomena leave us curious about how they work – from their formation to where they might strike – but for some, that fascination has led to a whole new career path. Enter the storm chaser, a career that until recently, little was known about.

The first credited storm chaser was David Hoadley, who in June 1956 was a recent high school graduate who, after a severe storm in his hometown of Bismarck, North Dakota, spent the day taking 8mm movies. He eventually went on to found the magazine, Storm Track, in 1977 (it remained in circulation until 2002). The 1970s saw increased interest in the field, with official storm-chasing programs introduced. But it wasn't until the release of the movie, "Twister," in 1996 that this profession gained more traction.

Storm chasers come from all walks of life – meteorologists, nature lovers, and more. Throughout the last several decades, the world has seen these adventurous individuals take on storms to gather important information that helps us better understand the complex inner workings of a storm and tornado. This list will look at the most famous storm chasers, their accomplishments, and more. (After this article, read more about the most destructive storms in U.S. History.)
