Tropical Storm Erin’s Formation Is a Reminder of These Hurricanes That Changed History
Hurricane season typically runs from June 1st to November 30th, and Tropical Storm Erin is proving we're in the middle of the action. The World Meteorological Organization names tropical storms and hurricanes to help the public and meteorologists track and communicate about them effectively. But did you know that, when a storm is exceptionally deadly or costly, its name is permanently retired to avoid confusion in future seasons?
In August 2025, Tropical Storm Erin became the fifth named storm of the season and is already drawing attention from forecasters as it intensifies, potentially becoming the first Atlantic hurricane of the year. Although Erin has not yet reached hurricane strength, many past hurricanes have proven so catastrophic that their names will never be used again. These retired names tell the story of nature's most devastating hurricanes.
To compile this list of retired hurricane names and the impact each storm had, 247 Tempo reviewed research from NOAA's National Hurricane Center, the World Meteorological Organization, and historical weather archives. Additional context on Tropical Storm Erin was gathered from the National Hurricane Center's August 2025 forecasts, The Washington Post, The Weather Channel, and multiple regional news outlets.
