"Russian Doll" (2019 – 2022)
Anyone who has ever seen "Russian Doll" knows why it's made this list. This funky TV series follows Nadia, expertly played by Natasha Lyonne, as she is caught in a time loop on her 36th birthday. The concept is strange by itself, but it's really Nadia who makes the series shine. Both season 1 and 2 were highly rated and praised. On Rotten Tomatoes, season 1 sits at 97% on the Tomatometer.
"The Midnight Gospel" (2020 – 2022)
Following "Russian Doll," we have "The Midnight Gospel," a truly strange animated adult series. The colors used in the animation and vibrant and hard to look away from. "The Midnight Gospel" is a bit hard to explain. It follows a spacecaster named Clancy Gilroy as she travels to different planets, embarking on unique adventures.
"Castle Rock" (2018 – 2019)
Another really weird, but good show, is "Castle Rock." This series went on for two seasons. It's a horror show based on Stephen King's fictional town of Castle Rock, Maine. So many supernatural things and creatures are featured in this series. You'll just have to watch it to really understand why it's so weird.
"Pushing Daisies" (2007 – 2009)
"Pushing Daisies" doesn't get enough love. This super funny, but also odd comedy series only ran for two seasons. It effortlessly blended fantasy, comedy, and mystery. The main character is a pie-maker with the ability to bring people back from the dead.
"Monty Python's Flying Circus" (1969 – 1974)
Taking it back to the 60s and 70s, we have the series, "Monty Python's Flying Circus." It's one of the funniest series ever made and still holds up decades later. This surreal sketch comedy series is all over the place and doesn't really have a set or regular format. It's another that you'll just have to watch to understand.
"Twin Peaks" (1990 – 1991 and 2017)
Fans were surprised when the hit TV series, "Twin Peaks" came back for one more season in 2017 as it originally ran from 1990 to 1991. This weird American mystery-horror drama takes place in the fictional town of Twin Peaks where strange things keep happening. The show starts with a local logger finding a corpse near the town and gets wilder from there.
"Carol & the End of the World" (2023)
What would you do if you knew the world was ending? This is a tough question to ask and an even harder one to answer. Well, for some characters in the series, "Carol & the End of the World," the answer is to continue working at their office job like nothing is happening. It gets a lot weirder than that.
"The Twilight Zone" (1959 – 1964)
"The Twilight Zone" is arguably one of the best TV shows ever made – and it's also the weirdest. The series doesn't just follow one story, but instead multiple. Each episode is a standalone series where something bizarre happens. The show blends sci-fi, horror, and fantasy super well and has inspired many of the greatest horror movies and shows ever produced.
"Black Mirror" (2011 – Present)
"Black Mirror" is the closest thing we have to a modern-day "The Twilight Zone." Within "Black Mirror," every episode tells a different story. It also blends different genres, including speculative fiction and sci-fi.
"Preacher" (2016 – 2019)
Some of the strangest, but also best TV series ever produced are horror or supernatural. This includes "Preacher," which is a supernatural adventure series that ran for 4 seasons. There is so much happening in this series. It follows a preacher by the name of Jesse who gets a strange power and tries to understand his gift. Along his adventures, he meets creatures like vampires.
"American Horror Story" (2011 – Present)
Also on our list is "American Horror Story," which gets weirder and weirder with each season. Each season tells a different story, but they are all sorta intertwined. Many actors are brought back each season but to play different roles.
"Mr. Robot" (2015 – 2019)
Last but not least is "Mr. Robot." It isn't horror or supernatural, but instead, a drama thriller filled with conspiracies, hacking, and super interesting characters. The main character in the series is Elliot Alderson, a cybersecurity engineer and hacker with multiple mental health disorders, including dissociative identity disorder. The series is a favorite for many and did incredibly well, winning two Golden Globe Awards.
