Even non-sports fans enjoy these films, as the best of the bunch go far beyond the game itself.

Representing a range of genre (drama, dark comedy, and fantasy), this list features films centered on hockey, baseball, basketball, and even figure skating. Many of these movies continue to leave a lasting mark on audiences. They inspire, entertain, and often remind us why we love sports in the first place. “The Sandlot” is a truly nostalgic movie for those of us coming of age in the ’90s, when the film debuted. It’s likely a touch sentimental for Boomers too, as the plot unfolds in the early ’60s. The story centers around a group of kids bonding over baseball. Set during one unforgettable summer, “The Sandlot” captures friendship, adventure, and the love of the game. While it wasn’t a major box office hit upon release, it has since become a cult classic, particularly with Millennials.

“Miracle” (2004)

“Miracle” tells the true story of the U.S. men’s hockey team’s incredible victory at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Led by coach Herb Brooks, the team defied expectations, ultimately defeating the heavily favored and historically superior Soviet Union. The film manages to capture the intensity, teamwork, and determination behind one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

“Moneyball” (2011)

“Moneyball” is a sports drama based on the Oakland Athletics’ 2002 baseball season. In the movie, general manager Billy Beane uses data-backed strategies to build a competitive team on a limited budget. Featuring standout performances from Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill, it explores the bold choices to choose innovation over tradition in sports.

“Space Jam” (1996)

As an unconventional choice, we included “Space Jam” in our “best sports movies” list. This fun film mixes live-action basketball with animation. Starring the oddest cast so far (Michael Jordan alongside the Looney Tunes), the movie tells a wild story of a high-stakes basketball game played in an effort to save the characters from capture. Its humor and creativity make it perhaps the most unique sports movie around.

“I, Tonya” (2017)

As one of the few true stories on our list, “I, Tonya” is a biographical sports drama about figure skater Tonya Harding. The film explores her challenging rise in the sport, as well as the scandal surrounding her involvement in an attack on a figure skating rival, one of the most controversial episodes in Olympic history. Blending dark humor with intense drama, it presents multiple perspectives based on real-life conflicting accounts.

“A League of Their Own” (1992)

“A League of Their Own” is widely beloved for its heartwarming story of an all-female baseball team, famous for the iconic line, “There’s no crying in baseball!” It tells the tale of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League during World War II. The film highlights the challenges and triumphs of women stepping into a sport dominated by men. It combines humor, heart, and history to create a truly memorable film. Its cultural impact earned it a place in the United States National Film Registry.
