"Field of Dreams" (1989)
"Field of Dreams" is high on our list for a reason. This family sports film blends sports with fantasy and drama to create one of the most iconic movies ever made. While the film did not win an Academy Award, it was nominated for three. This classic sports film is still loved by fans, boasting a Popcornmeter score of 86%.
"Rocky" (1976)
How can we not mention "Rocky" when talking about iconic sports movies? This is the most iconic of them all, telling the story of Rocky Balboa, an underdog who makes it big. This film was nominated and won so many awards, including nine Academy Awards (three wins). On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie sits at 93% on the Tomatometer.
"The Sandlot" (1993)
"The Sandlot" is another underdog movie. You can't help but root for the kids, wanting them to succeed. While it didn't win many awards and wasn't a box office hit, the film is a cult classic, shaping many childhoods.
"Miracle" (2004)
Moving away from baseball and boxing, we have the 2004 film, "Miracle." This sports film is slightly based on a true story, detailing the surprising hockey win of the 1980 Winter Olympics. This fun sports movie is a classic to many and boasts a 90% on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Moneyball" (2011)
Sports comedies are fun this includes "Moneyball." It's a biographical sports drama centering around the Oakland Athletics baseball team's 2002 season. It stars incredible actors like Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, and Chris Pratt. On Rotten Tomatoes, this movie also scores high, earning 86% on the Popcornmeter and 94% on the Tomatometer.
"Space Jam" (1996)
You must have seen this coming. Not all iconic sports films are dramatic. Some are also just hilarious and outlandish, like "Space Jam." This film effortlessly combines basketball with characters from the Looney Tunes franchise. While not a perfect movie, it's too fun not to include.
"I, Tonya" (2017)
Figure skating is a sport often overlooked. Not on our list, though! "I, Tonya" is a great sports movie that tells the story of American figure skater Tonya Harding. It's a biographical drama with dark humor sprinkled in and should be taken with a grain of salt as even within the film the movie states the film is based on contradictory interviews from Tonya.
"A League of Their Own" (1992)
Last but not least is "A League of Their Own." It's yet another baseball film to make our list, but for good reason. The film is about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) and is so iconic that it was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. With over 250,000 ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, the film scored 84% on the Popcornmeter.
