The Most Expensive Everyday Items in the World

We’re all familiar with fancy sports cars and designer bags, but luxury exists in almost every category imaginable, and some people are willing to waste spend ridiculous amounts of money on basic, everyday items. Ordinary things can become status symbols when novelty, craftsmanship, rarity, or designer branding are involved. Despite many of these products performing their basic function no better than the cheap versions, they are associated with exclusivity and prestige. In many cases, purchasers are paying as much for the story behind the object or the flashy appeal as for the item itself.

1. Luxury Toilet Paper

Some premium toilet paper brands have sold rolls infused with gold bits or packaged in over-the-top gift boxes. A few high-end versions have even reached hundreds of dollars per roll. As you might expect, the paper itself functions just like normal toilet paper. However, the attraction mostly comes from shock value. These products are certainly more conversation pieces than practical household supplies, but perhaps “taking care of business” in an exclusive manner makes some feel privileged.

2. Designer Water Bottles

Certain bottled waters taken from glaciers or volcanic springs can cost hundreds of dollars per bottle. Several brands market the “special” water as a luxury wellness enhancer. Packaging plays a major role too, as many of these waters come in crystal bottles with elaborate designs. No surprise to anyone, blind taste tests reveal many people struggle to tell the difference between this “designer” water and regular bottled water.

3. Gold-Plated Toothbrushes

Toothbrushes made with gold handles or titanium can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, despite the fact that dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every few months. Manufacturers go beyond marketing these products as exclusive; they actually claim the materials improve durability or hygiene. Luckily, we’ve never come across a dentist who recommends these super pricey toothbrushes. The luxury versions exist mainly for those who enjoy extravagant accessories.

4. Rare Coffee Beans

Certain rare coffee varieties, including beans harvested in unusual ways, can cost hundreds of dollars per pound. This one may be more than just marketing, as coffee enthusiasts value these brews for their distinct flavors. Some of these coffees require extremely labor-intensive harvesting methods, so a large part of the cost is to cover this time and work. They are also in limited supply, leading those who have obtained them to feel part of a special group. For many buyers, the rarity and experience are just as desirable as the coffee itself.

5. High-End Dog Collars

Pet accessories have grown into a massive industry, and many dog owners like to get a cute collar for their pooch every now and again. But luxury pet accessories have also become trendy. These pup collars go beyond cute fabrics or durable materials; they are covered in diamonds or precious metals. Wealthy pet owners sometimes spend more on a collar than many people spend on a used car. These products are marketed as an opportunity to pamper your pet in extravagant ways. But let’s be honest: dogs don’t generally care what is wrapped around their neck as long as it’s comfortable. A simple collar from a regular pet store will do.

6. Smart Trash Cans

Some luxury home brands sell trash cans costing over a thousand dollars. These “trash cans of the future” include motion sensors, fingerprint-resistant finishes, or handcrafted materials. These garbage bins know when you’re ready to throw your sushi container away and your housekeeper won’t have to spend too much time wiping them down. Purchasers appreciate that these trash receptacles look sleek in their modern kitchen. But let’s not forget, they still ultimately hold garbage.

7. Premium Sneakers

Limited-edition sneakers can sell for tens of thousands of dollars on the resale market. Some buyers never even wear them, treating them like collectibles or investments. Collaborations between top designers and celebrities can drive prices through the roof. Some rare sneakers are a huge deal in the fashion world, even as much as more traditional designer products. The sneaker market has become so competitive that people commonly camp outside stores before new releases.

8. Luxury Pens

Even in the digital age, some pens cost thousands of dollars. They supposedly cost so much due to precious metals, detailed designs, or famous brand names. Sort of like the footwear mentioned above, some buyers don’t even use these pens, preferring to see them as pieces of art rather than basic writing tools. To be fair, certain limited-edition pens appreciate in value over time, so they are a legitimate investment. Still, when it comes to pens, most of us are fine with the three-pack at the local Walgreens.
