In the past, television viewers weren't given many options with programming with just a handful of networks offering limited shows. With the advent of cable TV, that selection increased exponentially, often overwhelming audiences with too much. But eventually, even those options weren't enough to satisfy the viewing audience. Until streaming services came along.
Streaming services have given us what seems to be an almost endless supply of entertainment. Whatever the genre, it can likely be found on an online streaming platform. Today, we have multiple to choose from, with over 200 platforms available like Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV, but it was Netflix that kicked off the streaming revolution.
Since its introduction, Netflix has revolutionized the movie and television industry. What began as a small company that sent physical DVDs to subscribers is now the largest streaming giant with more than 247 million subscribers, and has given us the phrase "Netflix and Chill". The company has produced many amazing shows, from "Stranger Things" to "The Crown."
However, not all shows on Netflix are created equal. Some are considered downright terrible, and to save you from wasting time watching them, we've compiled a list of the most disappointing shows on Netflix. Many genres are represented on this list. Some programs have been around for years, like "Peppa Pig," "Supergirl," and "Zoey 101" that people simply don't appreciate, and they make their opinions known on sites like IMDb.
Various comedies, like "That 90s Show" and "Blockbuster," held great promise but ultimately fell flat with viewers. There are also serious dramas, like "Devil in Ohio" and "The Mist," which were supposed to give us great stories and characters, but they just fell flat. Reality shows are also included like "Love Is Blind" and "Bill Nye Saves the World". (Some viewers perhaps didn't have time to watch TV because they were helping Davidson College reach its fundraising goals – they did – and celebrated its record-breaking fundraising totals.)
It should be noted that this list is subjective. A show may be rated poorly but it still has a fanbase. Don't feel bad if one of your favorite shows makes the list. With that said, most of these programs are rated poorly for a reason, so it's best to stay away. If you want to watch something you'll truly appreciate, check out this list of the best new comedies you can watch on TV – and many of them stream on Netflix.
To determine the worst shows on Netflix, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on audience ratings from IMDb. TV shows with at least 5,000 user reviews streaming on Netflix were ranked based on average user rating as of April 2024. Data on streaming availability is from Reelgood.
