The Very Best Sit-Coms of All Time

The Very Best Sit-Coms of All Time

From the birth of TV mirth with Lucille Ball in the 1950s to the blended-family goofiness of “Modern Family” in the 2000s, the sit-com has been the shelter from the real-world storm for eight decades. There were plenty of examples to choose from in finding the 100 best television sit-coms ever.

To determine the best sit-coms of all time, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on audience reception from IMDb. Sitcoms were ranked based on IMDb user rating as of November 2023. In the case of a tie, the show with the greater number of IMDb user ratings was ranked higher. Only sitcoms with at least three seasons were considered. Cast information is also from IMDb.

The list almost evenly divides the 100 between sit-coms from the 20th century and comedies that aired in the 21st century — acerbic animated comedies, mockumentaries, family-themed shows, lives of social misfits, and the outpost of bar flies.

The best of these drew on strong writing, memorable characters, and in some cases, the ability to make us feel something more than laughter.

The earliest successful sit-coms drew on the vaudeville, radio and movie stardom of performers such as Phil Silvers, George Burns and Gracie Allen, and Jack Benny. But it was Lucille Ball, starring in “I Love Lucy,” who became television’s biggest superstar in the 1950s.

1960s’ programs such as “The Dick Van Dyke Show” built on the successful sit-com formula with more elaborate plotlines and strong comedy writing. This led to the first golden age of sit-coms in the 1970s, influenced by the civil rights, anti-war and feminism movements. “Sanford and Son” was among the first sit-coms to star African Americans — Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson.

The 1970s featured some of the most popular sit-coms ever, and in 1973, CBS lined up four of them — “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Bob Newhart Show,” “All in the Family,” and “M*A*S*H — on Saturday night. The four won a combined 65 Primetime Emmys.

Ensemble comedies such as “Cheers” and “Friends” came later, the latter show racking up the most votes — 1,055, 954 — of any sit-com on our list, likely abetted by the recent passing of star Matthew Perry. (Also See The Best TV Shows Set in New York City.)

Comedies from across the pond are well-represented, such as “Absolutely Fabulous,” “Only Fools and Horses,” “Peep Show,” and “Derry Girls.” (Also See The Most Popular TV Episodes From the 1990s.)
