Strange Laws You Won’t Believe Still Exist Across America
Times are changing and will continue to do so. What was acceptable and illegal 40, 50, or 100 years ago is likely not the same. And we can really see this in state and city laws/rules.
Have you ever wondered about the strange laws in your state or city? We've compiled a list of 15 strange ones that may leave your jaw dropping.
For this slideshow, 24/7 Tempo consulted news sources and law websites that went into detail about each law. A few of these are more rumors than the truth, while nearly all aren't enforced anymore.
Anniston, Alabama - NO Blue Jeans
Some laws are very specific to a city, like this one. In Anniston, Alabama, it is illegal to wear blue jeans, but only on Noble Street. Although silly, it's unlikely to be enforced. Most people don't even know this law exists. Noble Street is the city's original main street and acts like a vibrant downtown.
Blow Your Nose in Private
Maine is also home to some strange and outdated laws, many of which aren't even enforced. One of these is that in Waterville, Maine, it is illegal to blow your nose in public. You'll have to do it when no one is watching or wait till you're in a private place. Honestly, though, who can hold it in?
Three Sandwiches Tops
While some legal sources cite this as a real law/rule, there isn't a lot of information on it. However, apparently, in Massachusetts, at a wake, mourners cannot eat more than three sandwiches. Weird, right? Who's trying to tell someone how to mourn? What happened for this law or unwritten rule to become true?
No Shooting Rabbits from a Motorboat
Even rabbits need a fair shot at life, so in Kansas, it's illegal to shoot a rabbit while on a motorboat. The law specifically states motorboat, so if it's a paddleboat, rabbits are fair game. Interesting.
No Naps With Shoes
North Dakota is also home to some weird and outdated laws, including this one. In North Dakota, it's illegal to fall asleep while lying down with your shoes on. Maybe this law was made after a rude guest dirtied a bed.
Atheists Cannot Run for Office
Did you know your faith, or lack of, can get you excluded from running for office in a few states, like Texas? Although a rule in the state, it can't be enforced because it is unconstitutional. Other states with a similar or/same rule are Tennessee, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina.
No Photographing Animals Between January and April
This law no longer exists, but it was bizarre enough to include. In Wyoming in 1921, lawmakers enacted a rule where, between January and April, no one could take pictures of wildlife without a permit. In 1969, it went through changes where only commercial photographers would need a permit. Now, the law doesn't seem to exist.
Leave Bigfoot Alone
Oklahomans must love Bigfoot with this law. According to the Oklahoman, in Honobia, Oklahoma, there is a law against harassing Bigfoot. Do you think that with this law in place, Bigfoot frequents the town?
You Can't Sing While Wearing a Bathing Suit
Have you ever wanted to break out into song while enjoying a beach or pool day? Well, if you're in Sarasota, Florida, that activity is illegal. Cover up before bursting into song.
Monkeys Can't Smoke a Cigarette
Smoking isn't good for humans, so why would it be good for monkeys? A town in Indiana understands this well, as they have a law against it. In South Bend, Indiana, it is illegal to force a monkey to smoke a cigarette.
Don't Throw Rocks
Does this need to be a law or a rule? No one should throw rocks at people or personal property. Still, in Logan, Utah, it's in the city code. The city code prevents people from throwing rocks to specifically annoy any traveler or pedestrian, unless you have the car owner's permission.
No Smoking in Bed
There are a lot of very specific laws associated with smoking cigarettes across the U.S. In Savannah, Georgia, it is illegal to try or successfully light a cigarette, cigar, pipe, or tobacco while lying down in bed.
Hold Your Sneezes
Sources don't all point to this as being true, but it's a weird rule nonetheless. In Nebraska, it's illegal to sneeze or burp in a church. The Daily Nebraskan also cited that it's illegal for someone to fly a plane while drunk. That one is fair.
Don't Fall Asleep in a Cheese Factory
One of the strangest laws in South Dakota has to be that it's illegal to fall asleep in a cheese factory. It'd be so interesting to know why. Who was the person who fell asleep in a cheese factory to start this law?
Milkmen Need to Walk NOT Run
According to the Simon Law Firm, P.C., it's illegal in Missouri for milkmen to run while working. This is an outdated one that is probably not enforced (if milkmen even still exist).
