Not every state has a hometown elite athlete who will be competing in the Summer Olympics this year but according to the United States Census Bureau, there are 594 athletes representing Team USA. Some have previous Olympic experience and will be familiar faces on screens while others are making their debut, ready to impress judges and audiences.

Split by gender, the census confirms that 279 men and 315 women are representing Team USA. This is not the first time that women outnumber men in the Olympics–it's the fourth. From diving to boxing to basketball and tennis, the Summer Olympics are ripe with possibilities. A total of 46 states are sending their best to Paris. Some states are sending less than 30 athletes. Others have hundreds going out to perform admirable feats.

Though some states sent out their athletes by the hundreds, others, like California, have hundreds of gold medals to celebrate. According to FOX 10 Phoenix, California has earned 127 gold medals over the years, beating out every other state in the U.S. There isn't a close second, either. In second place is New York, with a total of 70 gold medals.

The Opening Ceremony made history as the first of its kind held in Paris (and not a stadium). By now you've spotted those familiar faces and gotten acquainted with new ones. You've seen the hope, determination, and excitement of each of the athletes. The schedule is packed through Aug. 11, so there's still plenty more to witness, many moments to root for your favorites, and time to invite friends and family over to watch along with you. (Here are 7 iconic moments of sportsmanship from the Summer Olympics.)

Methodology

To determine the states sending the most athletes to the 2024 Olympics, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on the official 2024 U.S. Olympic Team roster from the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee. States were ranked based on the number of athletes competing in the 2024 Olympics that recognize a given state as their hometown, adjusted for population per capita. Population figures used to adjust athlete counts per capita are from the U.S. Census Bureau's Population and Housing Unit Estimates program and are for 2023.
