It may seem as though the brands we all know and – mostly – love have been around as global powerhouses forever but they, just like everyone, started at the bottom and had to work their way up. Each fast-food chain began with an idea, however small; someone who had a great idea and developed it, filling that void in a market that was lacking and it paid off in a big way.

This is certainly true for America's biggest fast-food chains. Whether they're new or old, they all have fascinating, unique – and occasionally surprising – origin stories. But one thing they all have in common is they all started as a single restaurant. Some grew organically, eventually opening additional locations. Others were founded with an eye on scalability and expansion and began opening new locations as soon as there was proof of concept. Some remained company-owned, while others embraced a franchise model from the very beginning.

With innovative business practices, and menu offerings that struck a chord with the public, these eateries have grown to dominate the American fast-food industry. One thing they all have in common is a founder, or group of founders, who had an entrepreneurial spirit and no shortage of business acumen. No matter how they first got off the ground, these chains are still going strong today. If we've piqued your interest, here are fast food facts everyone needs to know.
