Well-known individuals are often revered by people throughout the world and are often found in a range of occupations, from athletes and actors to politicians and authors. We have come to know them for their current bodies of work, and often admire them for their passion, their drive, and their very way of life. While certain celebrities follow a relatively standard path to fame, others have experienced significant turmoil and lived through historical events before they discovered their true calling and achieved widespread recognition.

We typically only know certain persons of interest once they have achieved fame, but everyone has a past that may seem almost as though it's another life completely, which is quite evident in several notable persons. These hallowed few have overcome extreme hardships with unimaginable horrors. enduring through time spent in prisoner-of-war camps and ultimately not only surviving but thriving and eventually attaining celebrity status. Many of these noted celebrities served in different military branches from numerous countries, including the U.S. Army (which celebrated its 249th birthday on June 14th, a day also known as Flag Day in the United States).

To compile a list of well-known people who endured life as prisoners of war, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of sources including IMBD, History Hit, and The National WWII Museum. We then chose people from various practices, mediums, and wars, and then consulted sites like Biography and Britannica for specific biographical information. (Here is a list of famous actors who served in the armed forces.)
