The Gun Manufacturer Making World-Class Firearms Since Henry the VIII

Pinpointing the exact moment when the first gun was created is difficult. After the invention of gunpowder in China, however, early gun-like devices began to appear around 1000 AD. By the 13th century, firearms had evolved into metal-barreled weapons capable of firing projectiles. From there, gunpowder technology spread rapidly across Eurasia, laying the groundwork for centuries of innovation. Today, while countless gun manufacturers exist, a few can trace their origins back hundreds of years, making them the oldest weapons makers in the world.

The history of the firearms industry is one of invention, rivalry, and adaptation. Some early gunmakers gained fame by refining or even replicating others' designs, while others prospered simply by being in the right place—near iron mines or on the brink of conflict. Over time, mergers, partnerships, and shifting markets created the global network of manufacturers we know today. Many of the most recognized modern firearm brands have roots that reach back nearly a millennium.

To assemble this list of the world's oldest weapons manufacturers, 24/7 Tempo reviewed firearms histories and databases, including Oldest.org, Zippia.org, and NRA Women. We focused on companies with well-documented origins and ongoing operations, verifying details through additional sources such as Pew Pew Tactical and the Library of Congress Research Guides.
