Guns have been around for centuries, an instrumental component of hunting, self-defense, warfare, and law enforcement. Historians say the first gun ever made was from 10th-century China, the Chinese fire lance, or fire spear. The fire lance was a tube that used gunpowder to fire a spear (gunpowder was invented even earlier, in the 9th century). This is considered the ancestor of modern firearms and led to an industry that today, has a significant impact on the economy.

The gun industry has a fascinating history with various collaborations, competitors, and mergers. Some old gun companies began when they either took or stole designs and slightly improved upon them. Other companies found themselves in the right time and place, close enough to iron ore mines and close to emerging wars. Regardless of how they got started, some of the most popular modern firearm companies are still around and date back nearly a millennium. (For strange designs, explore 15 of the most unusual weapons in military history.)

To compile a list of the oldest weapons manufacturers in the world, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of firearms publications and online databases including Oldest.org, Zippia.org, and NRA Women. Next, we selected weapons manufacturers with an established history and current operations existing in some form. After that, we confirmed aspects of each manufacturer's history using sites like Pew Pew Tactical and the Library of Congress Research Guides.
