It often seems as if certain roles were meant to be portrayed by a specific actor; that one part that appears to have been written just for them. But a movie isn't just comprised of star roles. Without its supporting cast members, an integral part of every film, the movie wouldn't have the same effect.

Hollywood actors don't always rise to the top immediately. They often take bit parts that lead to supporting roles and if they are in the right place and the right time, may parlay into leading role status. But not all actors aspire to leading roles – many of them are perfectly happy playing sidekicks, best friends, teachers, mentors, and even comic relief. (Of course, there are the actors who shine in leading roles, like Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in the upcoming release of "Deadpool & Wolverine".)

Some of the best actors are those who play strong supporting roles. Even big-name actors like Tom Hanks, Robert Downey Jr., Julia Roberts, Will Smith, Samuel L. Jackson, and Sandra Bullock have excelled in supporting roles. One of the more prominent supporting actors is Steve Buscemi, who although has been a main character and cast member in movies and TV series, shines in supporting and villain roles.

To complete this list of famous actors who are always playing supporting roles, 24/7 Tempo scoured the internet for actors on IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and MovieWeb. We also searched on Reddit and other opinion-based websites, highlighting commonly written names. For this article though, we're only discussing famous actors who are always playing supporting roles. Many of these have IMDb lists of over 100 roles.

Some actors may always find themselves playing supporting roles because they have been typecast and are known as character actors. They excel at a specific role and casting directors seek them out for these precise roles. (For actors known for a specific role, check out our list of actors and actresses who will only be remembered for one role.)
