Images Illustrate How the 1950s Were Much Different Than Today

Many of us romanticize how life was in previous decades when the world appeared to be much simpler. There were no social media or streaming services to distract us, work had a traditional office structure of 9-to-5, which employees typically followed, and life in general didn't appear to be as stressful. Times of yore may seem better, but there were significant hardships we've never had to deal with today.

Like every decade, there are pros and cons, and the 1950s were no different. Although some things remain similar – we still stand in line at the movies – others are vastly different and illustrate how times weren't always easy. The Second World War ended in 1945, but people were still dealing with its impact, which continued into the new decade, like food rationing.

Things that are prevalent and commonplace today, like televisions, refrigerators, and washing machines, were still a luxury for some. Many families had to wash and dry laundry by hand and buy food daily since they didn't have a way to keep perishable food cold. But one of the most significant changes in 1950s life was women in the workplace. Today, over 50% of the workforce is comprised of women. In the '50s, only 30% of the workforce were women.

To illustrate how the 1950s were much different than today, we've created a list of photos that show everything from what cars people drove to what leisure time looked like. To create this list, 24/7 Tempo reviewed historical information from sources like PBS, History.com, and Census.gov. (Also See The Biggest Icons of the 1950s.) These images have also been colorized to reveal more about this remarkable decade.
