Hollywood is an incredibly influential industry, one that touches the majority of our lives every single day. From programs on the small screen, like cable and streaming juggernauts, "Game of Thrones," and "Breaking Bad" to the silver screen, with movies like "Star Wars," and the Marvel cinematic universe, these TV shows and films have had a huge impact on our culture.
What typically makes a show or film stand out are its characters, those individuals who bring a role to life, and most especially a great script that often gives us unforgettable dialogue and a collection of iconic quotes. When movies are remembered by their lines, and who uttered them, it can also play a role in shaping the lasting cultural impact of a film.
You may hear someone say something unrelated to a film, just a comment on what they're doing, but it takes you right back to the movie, like when a friend might say to you, "I'll be back."
Some films feature not just one standout quote, but an abundance of lines that stick with you long after the movie is over. Take the film “Casablanca,” which seems to have iconic phrases in almost every scene. Similarly, films like “Jerry Maguire” and “The Godfather” are also sprinkled with so much unforgettable dialogue that their scripts read like a collection of cultural catchphrases.
In creating a list of iconic film quotes you'll never forget, 24/7 Tempo reviewed the American Film Institute’s “100 Years...100 Movie Quotes.” This collection was assembled by the AFI, who gathered input from over 1,500 film artists, critics, and historians. These individuals were asked to nominate “quotes from American films which circulate through popular culture, become part of the national lexicon and evoke the memory of a treasured film, thus ensuring and enlivening its historical legacy.”
You may know some of these iconic film quotes, and you might even know them all to which you can raise a celebratory glass, and say, "Here's looking at you, kid." (For a different point of view, click here for the most famous quotes from the smartest people in history.)
