Legendary Actors Who Served in the Military

Not every actor begins their life as an actor. In fact, many actors work multiple careers over the years, including the surprising path of military service.

Service members of all backgrounds enlist in the U.S. military, whether in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or the Coast Guard. Everyone has their reasons for enlisting, be it a deep sense of patriotism, gaining valuable life experience, traveling the world, or pursuing higher education through the GI Bill. These Hollywood legends didn't let their careers stand in the way of their military service.

To compile a list of legendary actors who served in the military, 24/7 Tempo reviewed military-related sites such as the United Service Organizations (USO) and the National WWII Museum, as well as features written for the U.S. Department of Defense. We omitted celebrities who served their country in wartime but weren't actually in the military–like the iconic Betty White who was part of the American Women's Voluntary Services, a volunteer support organization and not part of the military.

Here are some of the legendary actors who served in the military:

Bogart served as coxswain in addition to ferring troops between Europe and the U.S. after the armistice. He tried to re-enlist during WWII but rejected due to age.

• Best known for: "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "It's a Wonderful Life"

Steward piloted a B-24 Liberator and served with the Strategic Air Command after 1947. He retired as brigadier-general, highest rank of any actor in military history.

Gable flew combat missions as part of motion picture unit out of England with the U.S. 351st Bomb Group.

Fonda served as quartermaster on a destroyer and joined the Air Combat Intelligence Unit in the Pacific. He served three years in Naval Reserve.

Murphy was denied entry to the Marines because of his size, but falsified his age to join the Army (he was 17). He is the most decorated American actor in military history, having been awarded the Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Silver Star (twice) and the Legion of Merit.

Arthur was a truck driver and dispatcher and was honorably discharged in 1945 with the rank of staff sergeant.

Douglas was a gunnery and communications officer in anti-submarine warfare in the Pacific

Newman was trained as a radioman and rear gunner, and flew with torpedo squadrons.

Belafonte loaded military ships for the Pacific theater in a segregated unit.
