World War II is widely considered the deadliest and most destructive war in history. Although casualty reports vary, according to research from the National WWII Museum, the war was responsible for 45 million civilian deaths, 15 million battle deaths, and 25 million battle wounded worldwide. Conducted between the Allies and the Axis of Power, both sides had highly regarded generals.

But it was the generals from the United States who played a significant role in securing an Allied victory. Their leadership and strategies proved instrumental in key campaigns in both Europe and the Pacific Theater.

This list of the greatest U.S. generals of World War II was based on information from Britannica and the United States Army Military History Center. Many of the generals listed here are considered among the greatest generals in American history. (Check out 40 of America's most decorated war heroes.)

Among the greatest U.S. generals of World War II, two were awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest U.S. military decoration, and seven were honored with the Purple Heart, which recognizes injuries sustained in battle. Despite their diverse backgrounds and distinctly different skill sets, these men demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities on and off the battlefield.

These are the greatest U.S. generals of WWII:
