40 of America’s Most Decorated War Heroes

40 of America’s Most Decorated War Heroes

Many American military heroes have made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our liberty and freedom. Those who have lost their lives in the line of duty have been honored and memorialized nationwide in various ways. Military leaders have been awarded with medals and recognition since the earliest battles, and holidays in remembrance of military service members and fallen heroes are celebrated annually in the United States and beyond.

Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day are reflective occasions dedicated to honoring the deceased, as well as living veterans. Independence day, celebrated on the Fourth of July, has become a more celebratory observance and many cities across America commemorate the occasion with parades, barbecues, and fireworks.

24/7 Tempo honors the legacy of some of the most decorated war heroes in our nation’s history. Our list was created by reviewing information obtained from sources such as the Department of Defense.

All individuals included in this list have been awarded with the Medal of Honor, which is the most prestigious military decoration granted in the United States. Nearly 3,500 Medals of Honor have been awarded, with more than 600 being presented posthumously. Many of those honored also received the Distinguished Service Cross, the nation’s second-highest military honor.

The list highlights those who served following the Civil War, as earlier awards were often influenced by political factors. Only American medals are included and they were given to service members who demonstrated extraordinary bravery and selflessness in battle. (Here is a list of the most famous battles in American history.)

These are 40 of America’s most decorated war heroes:
