Ranking The Wildest Superbowl Halftime Shows, of All Time
The Superbowl is a special annual game that riles up football lovers across the United States. However, you don't have to be a football lover to tune into the Superbowl. Actually, a lot of people watch the game just for the halftime show and the commercials!
Halftime shows have been performed in the Superbowl since around the 1960s. Before big artists, though, took to the stage, it was orchestra and marching bands. For instance, on January 15, 1967, the University of Arizona Symphonic Marching Band and the Grambling State University Marching Band performed at the Superbowl.
While we could list out all the performances ever played, we'd be here for a while. So, instead, we've compiled a list of the wildest and most memorable halftime shows ranked. What other performances can you remember?
Michael Jackson (1993)
You'd think that Michael Jackson, with his incredible talent, performed many times at the Super Bowl. But apparently, he only performed once in 1993, and it was one of the wildest times!
During his performance, he sang multiple songs, but what really made him stand out was his big entrance, where he disappeared and appeared in different places, like magic.
Diana Ross (1996)
During the Super Bowl XXX, Diana Ross showed off her incredible voice, but that was nothing compared to her exit.
While singing her last song, a helicopter picked her up in the arena! She also changed multiple times during her performance.
Katy Perry (2015)
Dancing sharks and Katy Perry are the best mix, right? Eh, it depends on who you ask. Although some might disagree, it's regarded as one of the best half-time shows.
In her show, she changes multiple times, and both Lenny Kravitz and rapper Missy Elliott were special guests.
Janet Jackson (2004)
Who can forget the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show? It featured a lot of great artists, including Janet Jackson. The show was a lot. There was always something going on the stage; you couldn't look away.
What most people remember is the end. At the end of the show, Justin Timberlake performed a song with her and ripped her top, exposing one of her breasts.
Aerosmith, Britney Spears, 'NSync, Nelly and Mary J. Blige (2001)
It's such a fun time when halftime shows incorporate music artists of different genres. The blends are chaotic, but they work! One performance that especially worked was in 2001.
During this halftime, we got to see Aerosmith, Britney Spears, 'NSync, Nelly, and Mary J. Blige perform together. Ben Stiller and Adam Sandler also did a skit!
Lady Gaga (2010)
Lady Gaga's Superbowl halftime performance in 2017 was gold. To start the performance, this pop legend performed at the very top of the stage patriotic songs. Afterward, like nothing, she was lowered down to the stage on cables.
Jennifer Lopez and Shakira (2020)
Last but not least is 2020's Superbowl halftime show, which featured two iconic artists, Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.
In this performance, the two brought energy and playfulness that excited audience members. It was so loved that the show was nominated for multiple awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live).
