Grocery Store Employees Reveal What You Should Never Buy on Sale
With grocery store prices and how high they are, it's not surprising that many of us are looking for the best deals. Whether you are using coupons, looking for special weeks with discounts, or only buying half-off groceries, we are all trying to cut our grocery bill down.
Not everything, though, should be bought on sale. Sometimes, when a deal is too good to be true, it's not bad to question it.
Are you not sure what you should say no to? According to grocery store employees across the internet, they recommend not buying these specific items on sale (and a few you should always buy). To find these items, 24/7 Tempo reviewed the opinions of grocery store workers on websites like Reddit.
Cosmetics
Makeup isn't cheap and for a good reason. It goes right on your face, so if cheaper products are used, it can cause you to develop acne or rashes. Although it makes sense why you'd wait for items to go on sale, really check them! How far are they from expiring? Does the consistency look right? If not, maybe pass.
Off-Brand Cleaning Products
But whatever you can afford, cheaper off-brand options aren't always the best, especially cleaning products. Have you used Dollar Tree hand soap? It takes way more pumps than brands like Dove. So, are you really saving money?
Dented Cans
A little dent on a can might not seem like anything too bad, but if you don't check carefully, it can be dangerous. A dented can might be a sign that it's cracked or opened, seeping oxygen into the food, which can cause molding and spoiling.
Molding Fruit
This is a rule that should be followed when buying anything at the grocery store. Are you going to use it soon? If not, don't buy it, especially if it's rotten/over-ripe produce. It'll go bad faster than you'd think, attracting bugs.
Cakes
Unless you're a cake whisperer and have the time to spruce it up, ignore on-sale cakes. Cakes that are close to expiring or past their date tend to be hard and dry. While not dangerous, it's not a preference for many.
Bread
Bread, much like cake, gets hard and dry with time. It is also great at hiding mold because of all its folds and texture. While you can buy cheaply, on-sale bread for recipes like bread pudding, which ask for stale bread, how often are you making this dish?
Prepackaged Salads
Lettuce doesn't last very long. It gets slimy and rotten quickly, which is why it's not recommended to buy discounted pre-packaged salads. If it's on discount, that means it's expired or getting close. If the sale, though, is too good to ignore, double-check the bag's items. Are there any slimy pieces or mold?
Pet Food
Did you expect to see pet food on here? Well, according to former and current grocery store employees, you should keep an eye on pet food that's on sale. It usually means they've been holding the cans and dry food for months, if not years, meaning they can be close to expiring.
Cut Vegetables and Fruits
If you really want to save money, don't buy produce that's cut up and packaged. It comes with extra costs all in the name of convenience. Even if it's on sale, don't trust the fruits/veggies. Employees recommend at least really checking on the fruits and vegetables. Do they look soggy? Or unripe? Fruits aren't always in season, so you may get disappointed when taking a bite.
Grocery Items You SHOULD Buy on Sale
It wouldn't be fair to list just the items you shouldn't buy, so we've compiled a list of items that you should run and grab when they are on sale.
Pasta
Pasta has a long shelf life. You don't have to worry about it going bad in a month or even six. If you see it on sale, grab it!
Cake Mixes
Just because grocery store employees don't recommend buying on-sale cakes doesn't mean you shouldn't buy a cake. Instead, discounted cake mixes are a good way to soothe your sweet tooth, while also saving money. You don't have to make it right away, either, as box cake mixes also have relatively long shelf lives.
Greeting Cards
How often do you need a greeting card? Instead of running to the store and buying one on the spot, you can purchase them on sale in bulk. That way, you are prepared for any sickness, birthday, wedding, graduation, or anniversary.
Alcohol
Alcohol isn't the cheapest item at a grocery store, which is why you should always buy it on sale. This includes promotions like buy one, get one free.
Frozen Foods
If you have the space in your freezer, it's not a bad idea to buy discounted frozen foods. They last long in the freezer and are perfect for when you don't want to cook elaborate meals.
Spices
Last but not least are spices. You can never have too much seasoning. Spices have long shelf lives, so you won't have to worry about them expiring fast.
