Films That Will Leave You Scratching Your Head

Many Hollywood film plots are outstanding, leaving audiences amazed by the sheer brilliance of a well-executed script. Other movies leave audiences just as stunned, albeit in a different way, confusing viewers right up until the credits roll. Many of these films attempted structures that are far too complicated or resulted in unsatisfying endings. These notorious films forgo conventional norms and venture into the surreal through experimental storytelling. The unintended result: audiences perpetually scratching their heads.

To compile this list of utterly confusing films, 24/7 Tempo consulted a range of cinema and movie publications including Reddit.com, Screenrant, and The Gentleman's Journal. We then selected films that failed to adhere to a conventional plot structure and received a high level of negative (i.e. confused) audience feedback. We confirmed information about each entry using sites like IMDB.com and RottenTomatoes.com.

This post was updated on Oct 22, 2025 to clarify the prime reason for confusion in "Cloud Atlas", purpose of the code word in "Tenet", Leonard's diagnosis in "Memento", description of missing patient in "Shutter Island", and "Lost Highway" cast.
