Climate change is causing the world's glaciers to melt. The world's biggest glaciers, once frosted over and cold, are becoming green wonderlands as the Earth's atmosphere becomes more habitable to plant life in places where it would have previously been impossible. The National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration posted on Climate.gov that 2023 was the 36th year in a row when the world's glaciers lost mass rather than gaining or maintaining it. While glaciers, which are typically not overly friendly to human habitation, might not sound important to civilization, they serve a crucial purpose in the global ecosystem. Let's look at pictures of the world's biggest glaciers years ago versus how they look now.

We looked at images of glaciers compiled by NOAA and published on their Climate.gov website to populate this list. To ensure we understood the implications of the images, we researched the loss of glacier mass. We also looked at statistics and studies around the loss of glacier mass to determine the cause of the problem as scientists currently understand it. Additionally, we researched the history of the glaciers we mentioned to gain a full understanding of the glaciers themselves.
