9 States Where Cowboy Culture Is Still Alive Today

Cowboys have long been a defining symbol of the American West, with roots tracing back to the vaquero traditions of northern Mexico in the 18th and 19th centuries. These skilled horsemen and cattle handlers helped shape the ranching industry, drawing from Indigenous knowledge and Spanish livestock practices introduced to North America centuries earlier. Over time, the image of the cowboy became deeply tied to American culture, representing independence, hard work, and life on the open range.

While the classic Old West era has passed, cowboy culture has not disappeared. Ranching remains a major part of the U.S. agricultural economy, with cattle production continuing to play a significant role nationwide. In this slideshow, we highlight nine states where cowboy traditions are still part of everyday life, from working ranches to historic towns that preserve the legacy of the frontier. These places offer a closer look at how the spirit of the cowboy continues to endure in modern America.
