Notorious Wild West Outlaws and The Lawmen Who Chased Them

Between 1865 and 1895, the United States experienced a dramatic wave of westward expansion, pushing into the vast lands beyond the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. This period, remembered as the American Frontier or the Wild West, was defined by massive migration and settlement. Thousands of European settlers journeyed westward in search of land, opportunity, and a chance to build a new life from scratch.

But the West was far from tamed. These territories were rugged, unpredictable, and often lacking the structure of established legal systems. Law enforcement was spread thin across immense stretches of land, making it difficult to maintain consistent order. In the absence of strong governance, different groups stepped in to enforce the law, including private lawmen, the military, and even some vigilante justice. Some figures, like Wyatt Earp, became legendary for their roles, while countless others, lesser known, worked quietly to keep the peace in a region struggling to balance freedom with order.

24/7 Tempo consulted numerous sources, including History.com, Biography.com, and Britannica to compile a list of notorious outlaws and legendary lawmen of the Wild West. Included on this list are a few famous sharpshooters who never killed anyone, as well as a small number of outlaws from the East.
