15 Wild West Myths People Still Believe

The Wild West has always had a mythology problem. The period most people picture, roughly from the end of the Civil War through the late 1800s, has been filtered through dime novels, traveling shows, cowboy legends, and more than a century of Hollywood movies. Over time, the real frontier became harder to separate from the version built for entertainment.

That is why so many common “facts” about the Old West are either exaggerated, misunderstood, or completely wrong. The gunfights were not always what movies made them seem. The towns were not always as lawless as they looked on screen. Even the cowboys, outlaws, sheriffs, and saloons people imagine were often far more complicated in real life. These are 15 Wild West myths that many people still believe.
