10 American Cities That Are Losing Their Charm

Sometimes, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what’s been lost. The city is still there, and the streets haven’t changed much. There’s just something you can’t quite put your finger on. Something is just gone. Longtime residents know it the moment they start talking about the good ol’ days to someone who’s never been.

All over the country, cities that once had a unique personality are losing that flair. Sometimes it’s neglect and years of bad policy. Other times, housing prices push out the locals, or tourism turns their childhood neighborhood into a backdrop for photo ops. It can even be all of those things at once.

Whatever it may be, Americans know that something is gone whenever they look back. These are 10 U.S. cities where locals say the charm is slipping away.
