NASCAR was established in 1948 in Daytona Beach, Florida by racer and race-track promoter Bill France, Sr. The NASCAR racing season begins with the Daytona 500, also known as the "Great American Race." This race, and others in the series, have grown to become a nationwide phenomenon with a large and dedicated following. However, this doesn't mean these races are safe.

NASCAR quickly realized the high costs of racing and massive pileups led to restrictions on the number of cars allowed on the track. Following the 1987 crash at the Talladega Superspeedway, racing officials also mandated the use of restrictor plates to regulate vehicle speeds.

To create a list of NASCAR's most tragic crashes, 24/7 Tempo consulted various sources including racing websites like Hot Cars, as well as ESPN.
