There are rich people, and then there are “wait, how is that even a real number?” rich people. This list is about the second group. We are talking about CEOs pulling in tens of millions of dollars, and in one case more than $821 million, while the median employee at their company earns a normal human salary. A good salary in some cases, sure. But still a salary that has to deal with groceries, rent, insurance, taxes, surprise car repairs, and the general financial nonsense the rest of us call Tuesday.

And that is what makes these numbers so maddening. It is not just that these CEOs are paid well. It is that the gap between the boss and the typical worker is so big it starts to feel like satire. At Welltower, CEO Shankh Mitra made 6,569 times the median employee. At Omnicom, John Wren made 1,219 times the median employee. Wells Fargo, Thermo Fisher, Howmet, BNY Mellon, Disney, American Express, and others all show the same basic pattern: the people at the top are not just winning, they are playing a totally different game.

To be fair, some of these companies have high median salaries. Netflix, Adobe, KKR, and ServiceNow employees are not exactly being paid in couch change. But that almost makes the CEO figures feel even more absurd. When a $200,000 median employee salary still looks tiny next to executive compensation, the scale has officially broken.

So yes, this is a list of the highest-paid CEOs. But really, it is a list of pay gaps so huge they make the phrase “hard work pays off” sound a little suspicious.
