The variety of desserts in the world seems almost unlimited. From pies to cakes to pastries to ice creams, there are sweet selections for everyone. If you don't particularly like apple pie, there's chocolate cake. If cake isn't your thing, opt for vanilla ice cream. However, in the United States, one dessert is loved almost unanimously – the doughnut. According to a survey by Nationaltoday.com, 96% of Americans love these pastries with the hole in the middle. And if you are one of them, you might want to find the tastiest donut shop in every state.

The origin of the mighty donut can be traced back to Dutch settlers who brought an older version, called an olykoek, to America in the late 18th century. By the mid to late 1800s, it had evolved into the donut we know and love today, but it wasn't until after WWII that it became popular, where during the Depression they were cheap – they cost less than a nickel – and filling, according to the Smithsonian Magazine.

Doughnuts have evolved from simple fried dough to a versatile culinary canvas for innovation. Bakeries now top or fill them with an incredible array of ingredients from savory bacon to spicy jalapeños to indulgent foie gras. The creative possibilities seem endless, and some couples even use them as wedding cakes or donut towers instead of traditional cakes. (These are the strangest state fair foods ever.)

Here is the tastiest donut shop in every state.
