If you've ever found yourself glued to your seat as the credits roll, you know how a skilled actor can stir up a range of emotions. One of the strongest is that surge of anger as you watch injustice unfold on-screen, with your heartstrings firmly tied to the protagonist you're cheering for.

Yet sometimes, evil wins in film, leaving you questioning how to detach yourself from the all-too-real fictional storyline you were deeply absorbed in just moments earlier.

Realizing a film is based on true events can make it even more heartbreaking. In "Not Without My Daughter," for example, Moody Mahmoody's transformation from a loving partner to a cruel abuser brings a chilling reality to life on the screen.

In some films, there's comfort in knowing the story is purely fictional, like with Guy Woodhouse in "Rosemary's Baby." Even animated villains, such as Scar in "The Lion King" and Cruella de Vil in "101 Dalmatians," can raise your blood pressure.

The most hated movie characters leave a mark and define the contrast between good and evil in films, which is why when you watch them, you can't avert your eyes (even if sometimes you want to). (For a slightly different list, click here to read about the 25 most annoying characters in TV history.)
