The Most Outrageous Backstage Demands Musicians Make on Tour
You know what they say - don't meet your heroes. Tour staff probably think this all the time as they try to work with celebrities and their strange requests.
Imagine working a job where a big-name celebrity requests sparkling water at a specific temperature? Or to never look them in the eye? These are rumored truths, but there are even stranger ones to read.
For this slideshow, since there is really no way we'd know unless the celebrity mentioned it or there is evidence, we used user forums like Reddit. We also used entertainment sources like WRIF and Ultimate Classic Rock. What do you think? Are these all true? How would you react to these mind-boggling requests?
A Framed Photo of Carl Sagan
Although odd, this tour request is sweet. Pharrell Williams loves the show "Cosmos" and its host, astrophysicist Carl Sagan. So, while touring, in his dressing room, he always requests a framed picture of Sagan.
No Brown M&Ms
While this might sound like a quirky ask or something annoyingly specific, Van Halen did this on purpose. In their contract, there was a clause that asked for no brown M&Ms. If they saw them, they knew the venue was sloppy and bad with details.
Live Potted Trees
Some riders and backstage tour staff also mention that AC/DC requested live potted plants in their rooms. They've also requested three bottles of pure oxygen.
3-Minute Corn
Aerosmith has had some odd requests while touring in the past. Instead of the usual things like water, soda, and even alcohol, they gave specific instructions on making 3-minute corn.
Video Games
One of the requests NSYNC had while on tour in the early 2000s was video-game related. They wanted the newest of whatever console was out to play before and after their concerts. This is more of a sweet request considering everyone in the group was so young!
Clear Plastic Wrap
Prince was a very particular person who wanted things his way, or the highway. Well, one thing he requested was for everything to be wrapped in clear plastic so he could unwrap it. On top of this, the strange musician asked for a doctor on standby to administer a B-12 injection.
Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup
When you are on the road for months at a time, it's not weird to want comfort food like homemade chicken soup. Well, Bon Jovi asked for just this. When touring, he requests a homemade, low-fat chicken soup.
72 Towels
Who in the world needs 72 towels at the same time? Apparently, the band Korn. They also requested "access to a 'Rock Friendly' lawyer."
Hand-Carved Ice Balls
Beyoncé is a woman who knows what she wants, and you can really see it based on her tour room and bus requests. One of these infamous requests was for hand-carved ice balls to cool her drinks.
I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!
Billy Idol is another artist who knows exactly what he wants, even down to the specific butter brand. When touring, he's previously requested I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!
New Toilet Seats
While this might not be the case anymore, Mary J. Blige previously requested a new toilet seat when touring. Considering toilets are full of germs, can you blame her?
Frozen Snickers
Jimmy Buffett has a sweet tooth. Did you know that? Apparently, he likes to request frozen Snickers bars while touring, as he prefers them cold. Would you try them cold?
Flintstones Vitamins
Vitamins are important when artists are touring, as they don't want to get sick and have to cancel shows. However, how helpful are Flintstones vitamins? Well, to Christina Aguilera, they are super helpful.
The Seven Dwarves
Iggy Pop's long list of ridiculous demands and jokes is probably not fully real, but they are funny to read. During his tour requests, he even asked for a Bob Hope impersonator and The Seven Dwarves. What does this even mean? Who knows.
73 Degrees Fahrenheit
Some people are just super specific about the temperature of a room. Too cold or too hot, and they'll want to bolt. Celine Dion seems to be one of these people as she's requested a dressing room at 73 degrees Fahrenheit previously.
Plants With Specific Heights
This is another request/demand that's gonna leave you scratching your head. While it's nice to bring plants on tour, why do they have to be a specific height? Paul McCartney requested four leafy 4-foot plants.
A Twelve-Foot-Long Boa Constrictor
While sober, the Mötley Crüe asked for some of the strangest things while on tour. One of the weirdest was for a twelve-foot-long boa constrictor. They also asked for a submachine gun.
Two Medium-Sized Cakes Reading “DIM MAK”
Lastly, there is one of the stranger requests: two cakes with "DIM MAK" spelled out on them. Steve Aoki also asked for an inflatable dinghy/boat.
