Sports have been deeply embedded into the lives of Americans for centuries. From Little League Baseball and PGA Junior Golf League to soccer and American football, sports significantly impact culture in the United States. Children are taught at a young age the benefits of participating in athletics. It can not only build confidence and teach life lessons like hard work and dedication, but it can also let them celebrate the wins and learn to deal with the disappointment of losing. Many have used these lessons when dealing with the most embarrassing records in sports history.

There are many impressive records in sports history celebrated by many but when athletes don't do as great, or even come close to it, creating memorable records for all the wrong reasons, that cheering can turn to jeering. While the players on this list certainly performed poorly, they aren't solely responsible for their actions. In many cases, the athletes played for losing teams that struggled with a lack of talent.

24/7 Tempo used the Sports Reference family of sites to review historical performances from past NHL, NBA, NFL, and MLB players and teams to determine the most embarrassing records in sports history. Early competitor leagues to the four major U.S. sports leagues were not considered. (If you follow baseball, check out the most embarrassing records in baseball history.)
