To succeed in life, whether your ambition is to be a doctor, an author, or an athlete, you need to set realistic goals before you can set about achieving your dreams. Developing a plan, prioritizing the goals you've set, and taking action to achieve them are all necessary, along with hard work and extreme dedication. It's also important to drown out the noise of naysayers who say you can't attain your goals and be like the 46-year-old fighter who proved it's never too late for a championship.

In the world of sports, naysayers are plentiful. Being an athlete can be incredibly rewarding, especially when you become the best in your field, but along the way, many people may say you aren't good enough or young enough. Certain sports advocate youth, supporting younger athletes – like figure skating – by touting age as a factor in success. To stay on top of their game, athletes put their bodies through rigorous training, and have frequent injuries. which intensifies as you age, leading many to retire.

These doubts they may face, and thoughts of retiring, certainly didn't plague these athletes on our list. They never got the memo that their age was a factor and not only continued in their sport but excelled.Drawing on statistics and data from the family of professional sports reference sources and including material from various professional sports websites and other media sources, 24/7 Tempo has put together a list of enduring athletes whose careers thrived into their 40s. (Then some are the most successful athletes of the 21st century.)

Athletes on this list were not only blessed with exceptional ability, they were lucky to have avoided injuries. Some of these athletes reached the apex of their sport after a late start, and others had some of their greatest seasons after they turned 40. Many of us are inspired by Tom Brady, who led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the 2021 Super Bowl victory over the Kansas City Chiefs at age 43. (These are the rowdiest teams in the NFL.)

Here are athletes whose careers thrived into their 40s.
