The Most Boring TV Characters of All Time

The Most Boring TV Characters of All Time

With the overabundance of television show genres, viewers can become acquainted with numerous lovable characters. There are characters we can relate to and love to root for. On the flip side, some characters are so mind-numbingly dull that their presence on the show feels useless. Sometimes, these characters are bland because the writers give the actors very little to work with; other times, their character arcs fail to reach their full potential. Additionally, many characters are used as fillers and offer no substantial benefit to the storyline and plot points. In other words, they fail to move the overall story forward, making them some of the most boring characters on TV.

While lists like this one are subjective because everyone has their own idea of what makes a character boring, to compile a list of the most boring characters on TV, 24/7 consulted numerous entertainment sites, including IMDb and YouTube show clips. Some of these characters are a no-brainer, while others may be controversial. However, all of these characters failed to reach their full potential, making them some of the most boring characters to watch, at least in someone’s eyes. (Read our list of iconic TV catchphrases that are now part of our daily talk.)

Bran Stark

  • TV Show: “Game of Thrones”
  • Years on Air: 2011 to 2019
  • Played By: Isaac Hempstead Wright

The “Who has a story better than Bran the Broken?” line muttered by Tyrion Lannister in the last episode had fans inwardly groaning. Literally, anyone else on the show had a better story; many viewers answered simultaneously.

When Bran Stark was pushed out of a window by Jamie Lannister in the first episode and then later developed warging powers, fans fully expected to see something spectacular come from the young boy. Yet, the character of Bran delivered poorly, and because he was so dull, it took a lot of work to wrap our heads around why he deserved the Iron Throne.

Jenna Hamilton

  • TV Show: “Awkward”
  • Years on Air: 2011 to 2016
  • Played By: Ashley Rickards

Jenna lacked substantial character growth, which viewers love to see and will root for, even if the character is not morally good. Additionally, her selfishness and lack of emotion did her no favors.

Mark Brendanawicz

Source: Courtesy of NBC

  • TV Show: “Parks and Recreation”
  • Years on Air: 2009 to 2015
  • Played By: Paul Schneider

In a sitcom, the audience expects that the characters are at least occasionally humorous. However, Mark Brendanawicz is scarcely funny. His character seemingly exists only to fill space.

Many fans expressed that Mark is bland, and they were fine with him exiting the show.

Chakotay

Source: Courtesy of Paramount Pictures

  • TV Show: “Star Trek: Voyager”
  • Years on Air: 1995 to 2001
  • Played By: Robert Beltran

Chakotay is often described as an “empty suit” or a “yes man.” While he was an okay character, he was dull and lacked the complexity that would make fans want to root for him.

Nick Prager

Source: Courtesy of CBS

  • TV Show: “Dead to Me”
  • Years on Air: 2019 to 2022
  • Played By: Brandon Scott

Secrets are the premise of this show. While Nick Prager is a decent guy, he falls short when it comes to complexity compared to the more interesting characters.

Kim Bauer

Source: Courtesy of Fox Network

  • TV Show: “24”
  • Years on Air: 2001 to 2010, 2014
  • Played By: Elisha Cuthbert

Most fans can’t get behind Kim Bauer. She comes across as ditzy, not bright, and lacking common sense. Her character arc feels boring since she doesn’t offer anything useful to the overall story.

Ted Mosby

How I Met Your Mother
Source: Courtesy of CBS

  • TV Show: “How I Met Your Mother”
  • Years on Air: 2005 to 2014
  • Played By: Josh Radnor

Ted Mosby is central to the storyline of “How I Met Your Mother,” but other than his obsession over finding “the one” and hopeless romantic attitude, he didn’t have much to offer the narrative.

Furthermore, Ted was tedious and pretentious, didn’t treat women well, and was quite obsessive. These character traits make him a boring and irritating character to watch as the show continues because his storylines are always the same.

Cece Parekh

Source: Courtesy of 20th Century Fox Television

  • TV Show: “New Girl”
  • Years on Air: 2011 to 2018
  • Played By: Hannah Simone

Cece was a good character. She was a great friend and girlfriend and often the voice of reason on the show. Yet, her presence in the comedic group didn’t fit. Sure, she was Jesse’s best friend and Schmidt’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, but besides those two aspects of her character, she had little depth compared to the other four friends.

George Nakai

Source: Courtesy of Netflix

  • TV Show: “Beef”
  • Years on Air: 2023
  • Played By: Joseph Lee

The characters in “Beef” are all rather unlikeable. However, George is one of the dullest characters when it comes to entertaining viewers.

In addition, George never truly listened to his wife, Amy, focusing more on his emotional affair with Mia throughout the season. Therefore, his character failed to add anything substantial to the storyline other than continually frustrating Amy.

Beth Greene

Source: Courtesy of AMC

  • TV Show: “The Walking Dead”
  • Years on Air: 2010 to 2022
  • Played By: Emily Kinney

Beth was a main character in “The Walking Dead,” with immense potential. Yet, her storyline could have been more intricate and never truly became interesting until right before she died.

If a character is going to make an impact in a show about the end of the world with numerous main characters, they need to be complex.

Scarlett O’Connor

Source: Courtesy of American Broadcasting Company

  • TV Show: “Nashville”
  • Years on Air: 2012 to 2018
  • Played By: Clare Bowen

The biggest pet peeve fans have with Scarlett O’Connor is how she continuously fails to take the opportunities she has by the hand and run with them. Instead, her character became increasingly predictable, with opportunities being thrown in her lap and her not wanting them.

Jon Snow

Source: Courtesy of HBO

  • TV Show: “Game of Thrones”
  • Years on Air: 2011 to 2019
  • Played By: Kit Harington

Jon Snow’s “I don’t want it” catchphrase eventually became an inevitable and hilarious internet meme. He mutters this line often about the Iron Throne and his lineage. He also says, “I don’t know,” quite often. These two lines sum up his character in an excellent little package.

Jon Snow doesn’t want the responsibility that his secret lineage puts on him, and he doesn’t want to fight for the crown that was rightfully his.

Jon was pouty and whiny, and he could have contributed so much more to the overall storyline if he had toughened up a bit and wanted a little more out of life.

Kate Pearson

Source: Courtesy of NBC

  • TV Show: “This Is Us”
  • Years on Air: 2016 to 2022
  • Played By: Chrissy Metz

Kate Pearson had some great moments and breakthroughs throughout the show, like when she faced and overcame the circumstances of her dad’s death. Her relationship with her father was sweet to watch, and the pain surrounding his death was painful to observe as she worked through her emotions.

So, what makes Kate Pearson boring? When it comes to her overall character growth, Kate deserved more throughout the show. Her character was the most like real life. Many times, people find themselves stuck in the mundane. She is flawed and real, which makes her a little boring. Watching a character who may remind someone of themselves isn’t all that exciting.

Nikki Fernandez

Source: Courtesy of ABC

  • TV Show: “Lost”
  • Years on Air: 2004 to 2010
  • Played By: Kiele Sanchez

Nikki Fernandez was a survivor of Oceanic Flight 815. However, unlike many of the characters, she is mostly insufferable. Nikki and her partner spent most of the time searching for missing diamonds, adding little else to the overall storyline.

Nikki and her partner stole valuable screen time from the characters fans wanted to learn more about without giving much in return.

Paulo

Source: Courtesy of ABC

  • TV Show: “Lost”
  • Years on Air: 2004 to 2010
  • Played By: Rodrigo Santoro

Paulo was Nikki Fernandez’s partner, and he contributed little to the overall storyline like her. The most exciting part of their story is when Hurley and Sawyer accidentally bury Paulo and Nikki alive.

Ben Hunter

Source: Courtesy of ABC

  • TV Show: “Revenge”
  • Years on Air: 2011 to 2015
  • Played By: Brian Hallisay

Ben Hunter felt like a filler character who was generic to the overall storyline of “Revenge.” Although it was sad when he was killed off, his presence wasn’t missed.

Lori Grimes

Source: Courtesy of AMC

  • TV Show: “The Walking Dead”
  • Years on Air: 2010 to 2022
  • Played By: Sarah Wayne Callies

Lori Grimes birthed Carl and Judith Grimes, two of the most pivotal characters in “The Walking Dead.” Yet many wonder how these two came from someone as dull as Lori.

Her storyline consisted of the love triangle between Shane, Rick, and herself and becoming pregnant by her husband’s best friend. This happened not long after leaving Rick in the hospital, presumably dead, making fans form a negative opinion of her right away.

If Lori had had some character development, fans could have overlooked these storylines. Instead, she seemed more of a useless character and never helped move the story forward. Lori’s most exciting contribution to the show was giving birth to Judith and eventually dying on screen.

Paige McCullers

Source: Courtesy of ABC

  • TV Show: “Pretty Little Liars”
  • Years on Air: 2010- 2017
  • Played By: Lindsey Shaw

Paige McCullers was a character that “Pretty Little Liars” could have left out of the show. She was meant to be Emily’s love interest, but the beginning of their story was odd and a little creepy.

If Paige had more character depth, layers, or anything else to add to the story, fans may have liked her more. However, fans sighed collective relief when she left the show, happy she wasn’t taking up any more valuable screen time.

Lucas Scott

Source: Courtesy of Warner Bros.

  • TV Show: “One Tree Hill”
  • Years on Air: 2003 to 2012
  • Played By: Chad Michael Murray

Lucas Scott was central to many of the storylines in “One Tree Hill.” However, his character growth could have developed better throughout the seasons. Lucas seemed stuck, while his classmates showed real growth into adulthood.

He remained the same broody and whiny kid he had always been, making his storylines recycled and less and less enjoyable. Their absence was hardly felt when Lucas and Peyton exited the show after season six.

Tommen Baratheon

Source: Courtesy of Warner Bros.

  • TV Show: “Game of Thrones”
  • Years on Air: 2011 to 2019
  • Played By: Dean-Charles Chapman

Tommen was the younger son of Cersei Lannister and the least interesting character on the show, even more so than Bran Stark.

His character would probably be likable in a regular sitcom. However, amidst the drama of a war over the throne, with the scheming, killing, and dragons, Tommen was simply too ordinary. His normalcy and decency are what make him dull.

Hank Hill

Source: 20th Century Fox Television

  • TV Show: “King of the Hill”
  • Years on Air: 1997 to 2009
  • Played By: Mike Judge

Hank Hill is calm, monotone, and a traditionalist. For this reason, many fans of “King of the Hill” find him annoying and boring.

Sookie Stackhouse

True Blood
Source: Courtesy of HBO

  • TV Show: “True Blood”
  • Years on Air: 2008 to 2014
  • Played By: Anna Paquin

Sookie Stackhouse is continuously listed as one of the most boring characters on television, which is surprising since the show is about vampires. She sometimes comes off as self-righteous while adding little value to the plot.

Miss Carrie Bliss

Source: Courtesy of Disney Channel

  • TV Show: “Good Morning, Miss Bliss”
  • Years on Air: 1987 to 1989
  • Played By: Hayley Mills

Some are surprised to hear that “Saved By the Bell” was a spin-off of a show called “Good Morning, Miss Bliss.”

The premise initially focused on the eighth-grade teacher, Miss Bliss. However, the show was canceled due to the low ratings, and a new one with the kids took place. Miss Bliss was eventually written out of “Saved By the Bell” as well.

Zoey Dalton

Source: Courtesy of ABC

  • TV Show: “Nashville”
  • Years on Air: 2012 to 2018
  • Played By: Charley Rose

Zoey was Scarlett’s best friend. She had a beautiful voice and likability, but the writers never grew her character beyond being a best friend.

Walter White Jr.

Source: Courtesy of AMC

  • TV Show: “Breaking Bad”
  • Years on Air: 2008 to 2013
  • Played By: RJ Mitte

Walter White Jr. had potential, but the writers failed to make him complex. Instead of giving Walter any character growth, he faded into the background.

April Nardini

Source: Courtesy of Warner Bros.

  • TV Show: “Gilmore Girls”
  • Years on Air: 2000 to 2007
  • Played By: Vanessa Marano

It took years to finally see Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes together. Therefore, fans were rightfully thrown for a loop when April Nardini showed up as Luke’s long-lost daughter, causing chaos in their relationship.

April’s presence caused many issues between Luke and Lorelai and exasperated their breakup. To make matters worse, her character was one-dimensional and lacked proper social skills, making the storyline even more challenging to watch.

Penny Blake

Source: Courtesy of ABC

  • TV Show: “Grey’s Anatomy”
  • Years on Air: 2005 to present
  • Played By: Samantha Sloyan

The day “McDreamy” died on “Grey’s Anatomy” was a dark day for fans of Derek Shepherd. When Penny Blake showed up at Meredith’s house for a dinner party, the audience held their breath, waiting for chaos to ensue. After all, she played a part in Derek’s fate. (though not solely responsible.) Should Meredith have treated her as harshly as she did? Probably not, but that is subjective.

When Penny was introduced, she was already unlikable because of her involvement in the demise of a lovable character. However, a great storyline was dashed when her bland personality emerged.

Ted Wheeler

Source: Courtesy of Netflix

  • TV Show: “Stranger Things”
  • Years on Air: 2016 to present
  • Played By: Joe Chrest

“Stranger Things” is an intricate and exciting show that pulls you into an otherworldly dimension. The characters are complex and exhibit plenty of growth through the seasons.

That is, except for Ted Wheeler. He isn’t on the show often, but he is somewhat aloof when he is. Ted is either complaining or sleeping in a Lazy Boy. His presence does nothing for the overall story. (Read our list of the best horror TV series of all time.)
