The average American diet is quite unhealthy. It lacks the essential daily vitamins and nutrients our bodies require and is replaced with items that are high in calories, sodium, saturated fat, and refined grains. This has led to high rates of obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and a host of other issues. Many of us try to make positive changes to ward off any health issues and according to American Heart Association, a good way is by eating at least two servings of fish per week. But just like with everything, not all choices are optimal and there are seafood selections to avoid at all costs.

Fish is generally acknowledged as one of the healthiest foods you can ingest, a lean source of protein that is rich in nutrients like Omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for brain and heart health, as well as certain vitamins and minerals that are also said to aid skin and muscle strength. However, it is important to be aware of which species are beneficial and which ones may cause harm when consumed. Many species, especially the larger ones, can contain harmful levels of mercury, posing serious health risks, particularly for children and pregnant women.

24/7 Tempo reviewed recommendations and warnings from numerous environmental and medical websites, some of which include the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch, Greenpeace, Sustainable Fisheries, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Fisheries site, and Medical News Today to determine which seafood selections you should avoid at all costs for both health and environmental reasons. (Another factor polluting the oceans is plastic waste, which is 10 times worse now than in the previous four decades.)

Here are seafood selections you should avoid at all costs:
