Record-Breaking Young Olympians Who Made Sports History

Opening Ceremony - Olympics: Day 0

Record-Breaking Young Olympians Who Made Sports History

The Olympic Games are the most prestigious athletics contest, the Acadamy Awards of the sports world. Earning a spot on an Olympic team means that you are the best in your sport, having won the top spots in qualifying competitions. To make it to the Olympics is a huge accomplishment for any athlete, the pinnacle of a lifetime of training for the opportunity to fulfill their dreams of saying they not only were in the Olympics but stood on that podium, having earned a gold, silver, or bronze medal. These record-breaking young Olympians who made sports history did just that.

But it wasn’t easy. For athletes to qualify for the Olympics, they follow the rules of the Olympic Charter and the International Federation of the sport in which they compete. The National Olympic Committee (NOC) in each country chooses which athletes will compete in the games. The Olympic Games do not have an age limit for an athlete to participate. While each International Sports Federation has its own rules (gymnastics minimum age is 16, diving is 14), athletes as young as 10 have competed in the Olympics.

To create a list of record-breaking young Olympians who made sports history, 24/7 consulted several sources including the Olympics, Topend Sports, and CNN. Sixteen of the youngest Olympians in history are listed below in descending order. (After this article, check out the 9 Youngest Olympic Gold Medalists in History.)
