Forgotten Icons: 1960s Artists Who Once Ruled the Charts

Forgotten Icons: 1960s Artists Who Once Ruled the Charts

The 1960s was a decade defined by cultural revolution and musical innovation, giving us timeless icons like The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, and Motown’s greatest stars. Many of the era’s Billboard hits continue to resonate today, shaping both modern music and pop culture. But not every talented artist from that transformative decade became a household name. Some who once topped the charts quickly faded from memory, their contributions overshadowed by those who achieved lasting fame.

To highlight these overlooked talents, 24/7 Tempo analyzed Billboard Hot 100 chart data and Wikipedia page views. Artists were ranked based on an inverse point system that rewarded higher chart placements (with a week at No. 1 worth 100 points, No. 2 worth 99 points, and so on). Only those with at least 10 Hot 100 songs, including one top 10 hit, but fewer than 1,000 average daily Wikipedia page views, were included. Eligible artists also had to have last appeared on the Hot 100 before the year 2000. The result is a list of once celebrated hitmakers from the 1960s who deserve renewed recognition for their impact on an entire generation.
