Big-budget movies like Alien, E.T., and Arrival are mainstream extraterrestrial movies. Most people have seen them, and those who haven’t, certainly know about them. But there are plenty of lesser-known alien films worth watching. Some are tense horror films, others are thoughtful science fiction dramas, and a few are surprisingly unique. If you’re looking for something other than the well-known classics, these underrated alien movies deserve consideration.
1. The Vast of Night (2019)
Synopsis
During one evening in 1950s New Mexico, a teenage switchboard operator and a local radio DJ begin hearing a strange audio frequency. As they investigate, they realize how unexplainable the noise truly is. Then strange eyewitness accounts come in, pointing toward something extraordinary happening just outside their small town. The deeper they dig, the stranger the mystery grows.
Why It Was Good
This low-budget film is proof that well-crafted atmosphere and strong storytelling can be more effective than big-budget special effects. The long takes, period setting, and realism make for an incredible sense of suspense. It slowly builds toward a memorable final scene.
2. Sputnik (2020)
Synopsis
After returning from a failed space mission, a Soviet cosmonaut begins acting in odd and disturbing ways. A military psychologist comes to evaluate him and discovers something horrifying: the cosmonaut did not come home alone. There is an alien presence inside the isolated research facility.
Why It Was Good
Sputnik uses psychological horror, a well-designed creature, and Cold War tension, blending them into one unique movie. The alien is genuinely unsettling, while the main characters are nicely developed. It’s a truly fresh take on alien horror.
3. Europa Report (2013)
Synopsis
A privately funded crew travels to Jupiter’s moon Europa after evidence suggests life may exist there. Tension rises as technical failures occur and communication with Earth becomes spotty. The astronauts continue on despite the growing danger. Their discovery comes at a huge cost.
Why It Was Good
The story is told through found footage and mission recordings. Instead of being hokey, Europa Report feels grounded and scientifically believable. The realistic depiction of space travel ups the intensity. The movie does an excellent job of building suspense through isolation and discovery.
4. Attack the Block (2011)
Synopsis
A group of teenagers in a South London housing estate is forced to defend their neighborhood from aggressive aliens. It begins as a strange encounter before quickly turning into a full-on fight for survival. The teens are classic unlikely heroes who have to work together to save their neighbors.
Why It Was Good
The film mixes science fiction, action, horror, and comedy surprisingly well. It has energetic pacing, the characters are witty, and the setting is unique, all of which help it stand out from other alien invasion movies. John Boyega’s performance is often praised.
5. Monsters (2010)
Synopsis
This movie opens years after alien organisms have spread across parts of Mexico. An American journalist agrees to bring his employer’s daughter safely back to the United States. Their trip forces them to travel through territory occupied by enormous aliens. Along the way, they begin to see the creatures in a different light.
Why It Was Good
Instead of focusing on constant attacks, Monsters tells an unexpectedly intimate story about two people finding their way in an extraordinary world. The film uses the alien threat as a way to explore borders and fear of the unknown. Even with a tiny budget, its visual effects are impressive.
6. Jules (2023)
Synopsis
Milton, an aging widower living in a small Pennsylvania town, discovers that a UFO has crashed in his backyard, along with an alien passenger. Instead of panicking, he befriends the gentle extraterrestrial. He names it Jules and secretly takes care of it, getting help from his two quirky elderly friends. When government agents begin to investigate, the trio hurries to help their friend return home.
Why It Was Good
Unlike most alien movies, Jules doesn’t involve invasion, heavy action, or horror of any kind. Instead, it tells a warm, funny, and touching story about loneliness, friendship, and finding purpose at a later stage in life. The all-star cast of Ben Kingsley, Jane Curtin, and Harriet Sansom Harris is wonderful every step of the way. This heartfelt sci-fi is one of the genre’s hidden gems.
7. Under the Skin (2013)
Synopsis
A woman drives through Scotland picking up lonely men before leading them to their death. As she continually encounters random men, she starts questioning her purpose and identity. Her curiosity changes everything.
Why It Was Good
At the time of its release, this science fiction film was unlike anything else seen before. Scarlett Johansson gives a haunting, understated performance. Despite harming a growing number of men, her character is actually sympathetic. The slow pace, unsettling scenes, and minimal dialogue build an eerie atmosphere.
8. Save the Green Planet! (2003)
Synopsis
A troubled young man is convinced his former employer is actually an alien planning an invasion of Earth. He kidnaps the executive and tries to force a confession. As the plot continues, it becomes more and more difficult to know what is real.
Why It Was Good
This South Korean film became a cult favorite. It manages to shift creatively between science fiction, dark comedy, psychological thriller, and horror. It keeps viewers on their toes and guessing until the very end. Even if you’ve seen hundreds of alien movies, chances are you’ve never watched an alien movie quite like this. Bugonia, released in 2025, is the American remake.
