Because They aren’t a part of everyday life, yet some claim they still roam the Earth, they only exist somewhere between myth and reality. They are the monsters people swear they have seen but science has never confirmed. That uncertainty makes them perfect subjects for horror movies. These films turn ancient myth and campfire stories into nightmares.
1. The Ritual (2017)
Synopsis:
After the death of a friend, four college buddies take a hiking trip through a remote area of Scandinavia. When they take a shortcut through the woods, they find themselves turned around. They come across strange symbols, disturbing rituals, and a creature that seems straight out of folklore.
What Makes It Scary:
The movie’s monster is inspired by the Jötunn, a creature from Norse mythology. It definitely has a unique cryptid quality. Instead of showing us the monster right away, The Ritual builds dread moment to moment. Isolation and the unknown seem to threaten them just as much as the creature. 2. Willow Creek (2013)

The movie uses a found-footage style to create realism. It truly feels like viewers are watching a real investigation gone wrong. Its nighttime tent scene is extremely creepy, creating suspense entirely through sound. 3. The Hallow (2015)

The film pulls inspiration straight from Irish folklore including beings like faeries and other mythical creatures. Its monsters are a unique mix of ancient lore and real-life animals, creating beings that feel both magical and horrifying.
4. Exists (2014)
Synopsis:
A group of friends heads into the Texas wilderness for a weekend getaway. It doesn’t take long for them to figure out that they are being hunted by a massive, aggressive creature. The classic “we’re-going-on-a-fun-camping-trip” quickly becomes a fight for survival.
What Makes It Scary:
Directed by Eduardo Sánchez, one of the creators of The Blair Witch Project, Exists puts a traditional Bigfoot creature at the center of the story. Instead of keeping the monster hidden and building suspense through something mysterious and unseen, it portrays the Bigfoot-type being as a powerful predator. Just like real wildlife, it can chase and maul its victims.
5. The Mothman Prophecies (2002)
Synopsis:
After his wife’s sudden death, a journalist finds himself obsessed with a mystery involving strange sightings, unexplained events, and detailed reports of a creepy winged creature. All the incidents have occurred in a small West Virginia town.

It certainly captures the same fear that drives cryptid stories: that unknown predators could be living in places humans rarely venture. The movie turns inconvenient car trouble into a terrifying encounter with something unknown.
