America’s Most Severe, Dangerous Droughts and the Lessons They Leave Behind

As climate change continues to alter the world around us, many U.S. residents question what drought conditions will persist over the coming decades. Some locations are already feeling the sting of hot, dry seasons, unseasonably altered compared to the weather in decades prior. In fact, some locales are experiencing changing landscapes and unlivable cities.

A long period of dry weather may have long-term adverse effects on the ecosystem as well. Lakes may dry up. Watersheds may not recover. The balance of species may be irreparably harmed. That's why we've decided to take a closer look at the worst droughts ever recorded in American history in an attempt to see how droughts are shaping our future.

To populate this list, we started by looking at a study done in 2017, A Comparison of the Early Twenty-First Century Drought in the United States to the 1930s and 1950s Drought Episodes that identified and compared major drought events in the United States. Then, we took that information and looked at the long-term effects on the affected areas to better understand the consequences of these drought events. We ensured that the sources we looked at were primarily peer-reviewed studies and major local news sources that had access to the necessary data to make sound conclusions.
