Charlotte, North Carolina, is a great city with plenty to do. You can visit the NASCAR Hall of Fame or enjoy a race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The city is also home to the Carolina Panthers (NFL), the Charlotte Hornets (NBA), and the Charlotte FC (MLS).

Other attractions include the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, Carowinds Amusement Park, and the U.S. National Whitewater Center. But, for as fun as Charlotte is, you may find yourself wanting to escape the city and perhaps head west to the Appalachians or east to the coast.

We've gathered 10 places all within a few hour's drive of the Queen City, and all worth the trip. (While you're at it, read up on sayings that only make sense to Southerners.)
