The Best-Kept Travel Secrets in All 50 States

If you travel across this country for long enough, you’ll find that it’s filled with many natural wonders, great sights, and a lot of wonderful history. Every state has something special to see. If you’ve been around a while, you’ve probably seen the most important tourist destinations, like Mount Rushmore, the Statue of Liberty, and Yellowstone Park, but there’s so much more than that. There are many less famous things to see, from sea to shining sea, and today, we’re going to show you many hidden gems in every state.

There are many different varieties of hidden gems on this list. Of course, there are the natural sights, like the big mountains, the swimming holes, and hot springs. There are also many museums that you’ve probably never heard of, including some in prisons and insane asylums. You’ll also find museums where you can see unique cars and old artifacts from shipwrecks. This list also has countless attractions that are truly unique, like a house on a rock, special magic shops, a replica of Stonehenge, and more. Use this list as a roadmap across the country, and you’ll see things you never imagined in our 50 beautiful states. 

To determine the best-hidden gems in every state, 24/7 Tempo consulted the official websites of the 50 states and found extra insight using travel blogs like Opting Out of Normal and Travel + Leisure. We also consulted Reddit and Reader’s Digest. Altogether, we think this list will give you some good ideas when it comes time to plan your next getaway. Alabama

There are many hidden gems in Alabama, including Alligator Alley and the Mobile Carnival Museum. However, the gem we chose is Neversink Pit, which is a hole in the earth that sinks 16 stories straight down. You can visit and rappel down into the cave if you’re extra brave, but beware of what may be down there!

Alaska

Alaska is one of the most gorgeous places in the country, so there are many hidden gems, including the Hubbard Glacier and the Alaska Raptor Center. However, we recommend the Reindeer Farm, where you and your family can hike and see real reindeer in their natural habitat. It’s quite amazing.

Arizona

There are many relatively unknown places in Arizona, including the Grand Canyon Caverns and Rock Art Ranch. For this list, we want to highlight the Arizona Hot Spring Trail, which allows you to hike along and sit in warm and comfortable hot springs. You’ll relax and see amazing sights along the way.

Arkansas

Arkansas is home to many hidden gems, including the Crystal River Cave and Tommy’s Famous Pizza. However, if you only have time for one stop, check out the Arkansas State Hot Air Balloon Championship Races that take place every year. It’s a thrilling race in the air and you can root for your favorite racer.

California

Of course, there’s a lot to see in California, but if you want to see the less obvious attractions, try the Channel Islands National Park or the Bodie Ghost Town. Our pick for this list is The Cabazon Dinosaurs, which are lifelike, massive dinosaurs that have been featured in movies, and you can see them with your own eyes.

Colorado

Colorado is full of natural splendor, and the state has many hidden gems, including The Ute Indian Museum and Strawberry Park Hot Springs. The gem we’d like to highlight is the Ouray Ice Park. While there, you can climb up ice paths on the side of a mountain. It’s also a great place to take pictures.

Connecticut

There’s a lot to see in Connecticut, including the waterfalls in Norwich and the natural splendor of Charles Island. If you love architecture, the gem you should visit is the glass house in New Canaan which is cool to see and visit and you can have fun in the surrounding park.

Delaware

Look hard enough, and you’ll see many gems in Delaware, including the Air Mobility Command Museum and Cape Henlopen State Park. However, you should also stop by the DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum, which has artifacts and art revolving around famous wrecks. 

Florida

Florida is a very interesting place, and there are many gems there, like the Zoological Wildlife Foundation and the beautiful Naples Botanical Garden. For something really different, visit the Medieval Torture Museum, and you’ll see stunning sights you won’t see anywhere else. It will make you grateful to live in 2024.

Many hidden gems lie in Georgia, including the Anna Ruby Waterfalls and Driftwood Beach. If you like rides and fun, then a must-see spot in Georgia is Fun Spot America Atlanta. They have rides and food that you won’t see at other similar parks. There’s something fun for everyone in the family, so it’s worth a stop. 

Hawaii

Half of the island of Hawaii is a hidden gem, so if you get the chance to visit there at least once during your life, take it. One place you should add to your bucket list is The Blue Room. It’s a secret cave that has water that turns bright blue when the sun hits it just right. Other hidden gems include Halona Beach Cove and the Kawainui Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary.

There are actually several gems to visit in Idaho, including the hidden hike at Owyhee Canyonlands and the challenging hike at Black Magic Canyon. One hidden gem to add to your bucket list is Independence Point, where you will get stellar views and a replica of the Statue of Liberty.

Illinois

Illinois has a lot of space and so there are many natural and man-made gems to discover, including the Pomona Natural Bridge and the Wizard of Oz Park in Chicago. A great sight is the Kaskaskia Dragon in Vandalia, Illinois, which is a giant metal dragon that shoots flames when you insert a coin.

Indiana

Visit Indiana for the people and stay for the hidden gems, including the Garfield Trail in Grant Country, where you and the kids can hike and see statues of famous Garfield characters. You should also travel to the town of Alexandria, where you can see and be photographed with the world’s largest ball of paint.

Iowa

Iowa has a lot to discover during your travels, including the spooky Masquoketa Caves and Ice Cave Hill Park, which always has ice, even in the summer. A great hidden gem is located in Gladbrooke, Iowa. It’s a museum where everything from dragons to historical sights are made of match sticks. It may give you ideas for your own arts and crafts.

Kansas

There’s a lot to discover in Kansas, from Rock City and its countless boulders to Slide Cave, where you can travel inside the earth. The gem we’re highlighting here is Mushroom Rock State Park, which has many massive rock formations that look like mushrooms. It’s pretty unreal and makes for some great photos.

Kentucky

Kentucky has a lot of open space and many hidden gems, such as the Louisville Mega Cavern that’s a limestone mine, and the Kentucky Castle, which is a massive hotel. If you love nature and you can only go to one place, visit Copperas Falls, where you’ll see majestic waterfalls and other amazing natural sights.

Louisiana

You could spend months exploring all of the sights in Louisiana, including the Whitney Plantation and all the fun in the sun at New Orleans City Park. However, a true hidden gem is the historical Fort Proctor, which is an abandoned Civil War fortress that’s surrounded by water. It almost looks like it’s floating, and it’s quite stunning.

Maine

Spend enough time in Maine and you’ll see many cool sights and places to go, such as the Wiggly Bridge and Cabbage Island. When you only have time for one, visit Seapoint Beach, especially if you’re going with family. It has gentle surf and soft sand for ultimate relaxation. You may even see some animals and sea life along the way.

Maryland

Maryland has a lot of cool sights, including the awe-inspiring Walters Art Museum and the beautiful Sherwood Gardens. A great hidden gem is Assateague Island, where you can camp, hike, and enjoy it all with wild ponies walking on the beach. Where else do you get that?

Massachusetts

There are various unique sights in Massachusetts, including a bridge of flowers and the massive Bancroft Tower. For this list, we’re highlighting the Paper House, which is exactly as it sounds. It’s a structure built entirely from newspaper and it’s as sturdy as any other house.

Michigan

Unique tourist attractions in Michigan include the Gilmore Car Museum and the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. If you’re short on time, definitely check out Arch Rock, which is a huge natural bridge 146 feet up in the air. It’s truly a unique sight that takes thousands of years to develop.

Minnesota

You’ll find many great gems in Minnesota, including Pine River, which is an area that provides camping, hiking and even an ice rink. There’s also the Judy Garland Museum for fans of old cinema. For something really special, visit the Quietest Place on Earth in Minneapolis, which is in the Guiness Book for the quietest place. You won’t find anywhere else like it.

Mississippi

Mississippi has a lot of great hidden gems, such as the Institute for Marine Mammals and the important Civil Rights Museum. If you only visit one, head to Ship Island. You can only get there by ferry or boat, and then you’ll enjoy pristine beaches and see a ton of history while being secluded from the world.

Missouri

You’ll see a lot of unique sights in Missouri. You can go underground and visit the Fantastic Caverns or go back in time to the Arabia Steamboat Museum. For a real hidden gem, visit the old Missouri State Penitentiary. It’s closed now, but you can still take tours. See how the prisoners used to live. It’s quite a wild ride.

Montana

There are many amazing sights that can be considered hidden gems in Montana, including the Garden of One Thousand Buddhas and Glacier National Park. If you love technology, the hidden gem we recommend is the American Computer & Robotics Museum. You’ll see tech that’s old and new and get a blast from the past.

Nebraska

Nebraska is all about natural wonder and there are many gems to hit, including the monumental Chimney Rock and the unique Carhenge, which is a replica of Stonehenge. Perhaps the best hidden gem is the Lincoln Highway, which is the country’s first transcontinental highway. Drive down it and feel like an old settler.

Nevada

Nevada is one of the most unique states, so there’s a lot to see, including the Neon Sign Museum and the Pinball Hall of Fame. A real gem is the Atomic Museum, which documents the history of nuclear testing in the state. You’ll learn facts about that incredible power that you never knew before.

New Hampshire

You’ll be in awe in New Hampshire as you visit the massive Madison Boulder and the old-school Riverwalk Covered Bridge. A great hidden gem is the American Classic Arcade Museum, where you can play games and learn about the golden age of gaming. It’s fun for kids and adults alike.

New Jersey

A nice hidden gem in New Jersey is the Kings Spa that provides ultimate relaxation with multiple floors filled with saunas and other gentle treatments. Another great destination in New Jersey is America’s Oldest Magic Shop. Stores like this don’t exist anymore and it’s very cool to see how the old magicians used to do their tricks.

New Mexico

New Mexico has many great special gems, including the Tinkertown Museum, which has various handcrafted trinkets, and the awe-inspiring White Sands National Park. A very special location is the Blue Hole, which is a very clear blue pool that is 80 feet deep. Swim in it if you dare!

New York

When you leave the city, you’ll find that the state of New York has many amazing hidden gems, and one of the best of all is the Museum of Ice Cream. While there, you can taste many unique flavors of ice cream and have a blast with the family. There are also many great national parks in the state.

North Carolina

This state is loaded with gems, including The Folk Art Center, the Asheville Pinball Museum, and the Billy Graham Library. To top them all, there’s the Mingo Falls, which is made up of several different breathtaking waterfalls.

North Dakota

North Dakota is filled with natural beauty and hidden gems, including Jamestown, where you can see the world’s largest buffalo. However, if you can only visit one place, go to The Coghlan Castle, which is a stone marvel made way back in the early 1900s. It’s like visiting a castle from the movies.

Ohio

This is the place to go for hidden gems. Visit League Park, Ash Cave, or the Findlay Market for a real thrill. A great gem we love is Pyramid Hill Sculpture Park, which is the home of a really cool pioneer house that’s worth a visit to see how people used to live.

Oklahoma

Go off the beaten path in Oklahoma, and you see a lot of cool stuff, including the Museum of Osteology, the Toy & Action Figure Museum, and the Stafford Air & Space Museum. You should also visit the Great Salt Plains, where the kids can dig crystals out of the salt that used to fill an ocean that was there many years ago.

Oregon

There are many natural hidden gems in Oregon. There’s the awe-inspiring Crater Lake, the incredible Valley of Giants, and wonderful natural rock bridges. Make sure to bring your hiking boots and your camera. 

Pennsylvania

Head to Northern Pennsylvania, and you’ll see many hidden gems, such as Austin Dam Park, where you can hike and gawk at the natural beauty. Another gem is the Coudersport Ice Mine, which has ice formations that are there all year long. Make sure to dress warm enough.

Rhode Island

You’ll find many awesome gems in Rhode Island, including Narragansett, which is home to an adorable village and a huge lighthouse. Another gem is the picturesque Purgatory Chasm, which was formed by glaciers many years ago. It really puts things like time into perspective.

South Carolina

South Carolina is home to many parks that are considered hidden gems, including Morris Island and its huge lighthouse, the beautiful plantlife of Cypress Gardens, and the splendor of Mount Pleasant. There’s a lot of natural beauty in the state, so take the time to explore.

Tennessee

Tennessee has many unique hidden gems, including the Lane Motor Museum for car lovers, the Forbidden Caverns for adventurous folks, and the fun and educational Metal Museum. Don’t forget to take a dip in the gorgeous Blue Hole Falls and hike in the surrounding forest.

Texas

Texas is vast and, because of its size, there are many cool things to discover. If you can only head to one, then visit the Westcave Outdoor Discovery Center. Bring your camera and get ready to be in awe of the waterfalls, trails, a grotto, and more.

Utah

Visit Utah and you have a chance to see many off-the-beaten path national parks, including Dead Horse State Park, which is home to colorful canyons. There’s also the Blue Hill Badlands Region, which is home to rainbow colored hills and other natural wonders.

Vermont

There are many hidden gems to behold in Vermont, including the majestic waterfalls at Moss Glen Falls. For something completely different, head to Burlinton, where you can step in front of the world’s largest filing cabinet. Don’t forget to bring your camera. Otherwise, people won’t believe you were there.

Virginia

Virginia is home to many unique hidden gems, including the Edgar Allen Poe Museum, the Military Aviation Museum, and the Frontier Culture Museum. You can also trick your friends by taking pictures at Foamhenge, which is Stonehenge made out of foam.

There are countless gems to experience in Washington, including Rialto Beach, Manito Park, and the Cape Flattery Trail. Perhaps the most exciting is the Hoh Rain Forest. It’s home to old trees, plush greenery, and tranquil nature that will help you relax.

West Virginia

There’s a lot of rich history in West Virginia and many hidden gems. A few standouts include the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, the West Virginia Penitentiary, and the huge and impressive New River Gorge Bridge.

Wisconsin

While there are a lot of cool things to see in Wisconsin, from the Olbrich Botanical Gardens to Swing Park, our vote is for The House on the Rock. This unique structure has the world’s largest carousel, hundreds of model ships, and a long hallway that hangs 156 feet over the forest floor.

Wyoming

There’s a lot to discover in Wyoming. One of the best hidden gems is the Medicine Wheel, which is the largest stone structure constructed from white limestone.
