Preparing for any disasters is a fundamental part of life but if you live in certain areas, some natural disasters are par for the course. For those who live in regions along the southeastern United States, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean, your chances of encountering hurricanes are exponentially higher. Essential hurricane survival tips everyone should know are vital but most especially to those in these affected regions.

Even though hurricanes are unpredictable, it's possible to get an idea of their intensity with the help of technological advancements like satellites, drones, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Meteorologists predict that the 2024 hurricane season will be more active than normal, with an 85% chance of an above-normal season, thanks, in part, to La Niña and warmer-than-average ocean temperatures. Three have already become hurricanes – one major (Ernesto) – and we still have three more months until the season ends on November 30.

To create this list of essential hurricane survival tips everyone should know, 24/7 Tempo consulted several sources such as the National Weather Service, the American Red Cross, and The Old Farmer's Almanac. These expert tips will help you know what to do if you get caught in a hurricane. (Check out how to tell the difference between a hurricane and a tornado.)
