Plastic has been around for quite some time. The first man-made plastic, known as Parkesine, was invented by Alexander Parkes in 1855. This eventually gave way to the first synthetic plastic, known as Bakelite, invented by Belgian chemist Leo Baekeland in 1907. But all forms of plastic didn't see production on such large scales until after the Second World War when plastics began replacing more traditional materials due to their cost effectiveness, versatility, and ease of manufacturing.

Between 1950 and 2017, the world and its people produced an estimated 9.2 billion metric tons of plastic. This might not be a problem if plastic wasn't so harmful, both to the environment and us. Plastic takes forever to degrade, if at all, but most plastic sees a single use before it's dumped back into the environment or our bodies.

In recent years, considerable studies have been conducted on the danger of plastic and the effect it can have on our bodies, and a recent study found microplastics like phthalates in every part of the human body, including our reproductive organs. (For a more general survey of food containing microplastics, explore foods with the most plastic chemicals.)

To compile a list of beverages with surprising levels of plastic contamination, 24/7 Tempo relied heavily on the study published by Consumer Reports regarding the level of plastics and BPAs found in foods. From there, we confirmed aspects of the research and information about microplastics using sites like WebMD, the National Library of Medicine, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
